Report by PRO Damien Farrelly

On Saturday 26th April 2014 Kilmainhamwood got their Junior 'A' Championship back on track with a ten point victory over Kilbride in Simonstown on a scoreline of Kilmainhamwood 2-13 Kilbride 0-09. The game was part of a K-Wood double header and the 'A' team were hoping to go one better than their 'C's as they could only manage a draw against Ballivor in the earlier game.

K-Wood got off to the perfect start as they registered 1-01 to no score in the first ten minutes through a Padraig Owens point and a Stephen Kiernan goal. But Kilbride responded with two points of their own one from a free and another from play. These scores proved to be Kilbride's only scores of the half.

But the 'Wood kicked on firstly with a superb Kiernan free from near 55 yards out and Owens followed this up with his second score of the match after great work from Andy Farrelly, Micheal Shankey and provider David Russel. Kiernan added to his rally as he kicked three unanswered points before the break, two frees and one from play. This left the 'Wood leading 1-06 to 0-02 at the break.

Kilmainhamwood made one change at the break with the introduction of Francis Owens for his cousin Padraig in the K-Wood attack.
The 'Wood came out after the break at a blistering pace and from the throw-in, Micheal Shankey provided Alan Carolan with a sublime pass for him to then kick over his first of the match. From the kick out Carolan tackled well to win the ball and provide Russel who then got himself on the scoresheet too. This left the 'Wood leading by nine.

Kilbride brought this back to six points with three unanswered frees as a result of fouling by the 'Wood defence. But Kilmainham responded through another Kiernan free, but again fouling in the 'Wood's defence let Kilbride get within five points as they slotted over two more frees.

K-Wood responded well by kicking the next three scores, two from play, one for Kiernan and another from Carolan and another Kiernan free. But Kilbride were not done as they then kicked what was only their second score from play to cut the 'Woods lead to seven.

The game was more or less over when the 'Wood kicked 1-01 without reply through a Russel point and substitute Francis Owens goal. Prior to this, a scramble on the 'Wood's goal line resulted in a Kilbride player receiving a red and finishing with 14 men, and it was Kilbride who kicked the last score of the match from a free, to leave Kilmainhamwood's winning margin at ten points.
Best for Kilmainhamwood were Stephen Smith and Andy Farrelly in defence and Stephen Kiernan and Alan Carolan in attack.

K-Wood Team: J. Carolan, E. Clarke, S. Smith, P. Moran, M. Shankey, A. Farrelly, P. Barber, S. Clarke, S. Mulligan, A. Carolan, S. Kiernan, H. Corbally, D. Russel, P. Owens, C. Kiernan Subs: F. Owens for P. Owens and G. Yorke for P. Barber (BC)
K-Wood Scorers: S. Kiernan (1-07, 0-04 f), F. Owens (1-00) P. Owens (0-02), A. Carolan (0-02), D. Russel (0-02),

Report by Chairman Jim Condra

Jnr C championship v Ballivor Sat April 26th
1 -10 - 1-10
Kilmainhamwood scored a late point from a Mick Clarke free to snatch a draw in this tough and uncomprimising encounter. The Wood had a comfortable half time lead 1-5 to 0-4 with an opportunist goal from Johnny Keogan and points from Ritchie Corbally,Damien Russell,Tommy Owens, Mick Clarke and Mick Berrill. Ballivor were right back in it with barely a minute of the second half gone when a speculative ball rebounded off the upright into an onrushing Ballivor forward who slammed the ball to the net . This was soon follwed up with the equaliser and from then to the finish the sides trades points until in the dying minutes Ballivor took the lead and looked like winners but Clarke tapped over a close in free with little time remaining to draw the tie. Keogan and Russel both added to their first half scores. Darren Owens & Gary Yorke both raised white flags also. Bothsides will feel they left the points behind them especially Ballivor who squandered many chances in the second period. Kilmainhamwood had chances themselves and on a couple of accasions threatened to strike the killer second goal but it failed to materialise.
Best for The Wood were Barney Bennett, Jude Collins, Damien Russell and Mark Kiernan
Kwood : Padraig Carolan (Damien Cunnigham), Niall Mc Cabe, Mark Kiernan,, Barney Bennett,Martin Shields (Damien Farrelly), Jude Collins, Ronnie Owens (Michael Gargan),Gary Yorke, Richard Corbally Corbally, Johnny Keogan,Damien Russell,Darren Owens, Tommy Owens (Philip Reilly), Mick Clarke, Mick Berrill
