There was also a presentation to the 1961 Under-16 team that brought the first championship back to the ‘Wood. The men honoured were Ollie Gilsenan, Gerry Reilly, John Russell, Michael Farrelly, Philip Farrelly, Jim Farrelly, Tom Clarke (capt), Larry McCormack, Jim Stafford, Pat Kavanagh, Michael Dillon, Matt Donnellan(RIP), Frank Gilsenan, Francie Owens, Brian Rafferty, Michael McDermott, Percy McKeever, Jim Armstrong, Peter Corrigan(RIP), Noel Smith & Harry Briody. The manager / coach on that occasion was Gerry Tuomey and he made an emotional speech that was listened to with respect from the big crowd amassed.

The Kilmainhamwood Under-10’s had a superb 0-5 to 0-4 win in the Division Three final of the 13-a-side Farrell Cup in Drumconrath on Saturday 15th against a strong St. Culberts side. On a cold windy day the team started with Jonathan Reilly in goals with Cian Murphy & Niall Bennett the two full-backs. The half-back line was Dean Carolan, Declan Reilly & Dylan Owens. Jamie Fagan & Brian Cassidy were in midfield, with Keith Reilly, Niall Conlon and John McCreevy in the half-forward line. Sean Bennett & Calum Crosbie were the full-forwards.

The game started at a hectic pace and St. Culberts were first out of the blocks and were 0-3 to 0-0 up after 7 minutes. However, the ‘Wood lads rallied and despite playing against a strong breeze managed to stem the tide and Calum Crosbie scored the only score of the first half for the ‘Wood. Declan Reilly moved to full forward to compete for balls coming into the square. The first half was a tough 20 minutes with Jamie Fagan, Brian Cassidy, Niall Bennett, Dylan Owens, Cian Murphy, Niall Conlon and Dean Carolan all battling hard against a big strong team. At the interval the ‘Wood were 0-1 to 0-3 down but didn’t panic.

The lads from the ‘Wood knew that they had to up their game in the second half and set about their wind-assisted tasks with gusto. Jonathan Reilly made a few vital saves during the second half and kicked out intelligently. Cian Murphy was fantastic and raided up & down the flanks culminating with an unbelievable long range point. Niall Bennett was strong at full-back but when he came to midfield he turned the game with a magnificent display of power and skill. Dylan Owens tackled very well all game and cut out a lot of attacks. Declan Reilly started at centre back but when moved to full-forward became the focal point of every ‘Wood attack and scored two lovely points including the winner two minutes from time. Dean Carolan at wing back was rock solid and blocked and cleared anything that came his way. Brian Cassidy worked tirelessly and never gave up going in full-back for the last 10 minutes. Jamie Fagan covered every blade of grass supporting defence and attack. The half-forward line of John McCreevy, Niall Conlon (capt) and Keith Reilly made sure that any loose ball was gobbled up. Niall Conlon was the inspirational fulcrum of the team with all good play going through him. Sean Bennett in the corner was available for every ball and nearly scored with a few efforts. Calum Crosbie started at full-forward and after getting the opening score for the ‘Wood went back to sure up the defence from centre-back.

When the final whistle was blown K-wood were one point to the good and the lads were delighted that their hard work and dedication all year paid off when they received their medals.
