Meath were on the wrong side of a one point score-line when they took on Longford in Kilmainhamwood for the official opening of the new facilities on Sunday 8th May at 7pm.

The pitch was in immaculate condition and the weather stayed fine albeit a little windy. The crowds started to gather from 6pm and were greeted by friendly stewards who assisted with car parking and offered official match day programme. There was traditional Irish music and the atmosphere was building as both team arrived and warmed up using the new facilities and then onto the hallowed turf that many a Kilmainhamwood super stars calls home.

Chairman Henry Corbally welcomed the assembled crowd and Fr. Cooney blessed the facilities and Meath GAA chairman Barney Allen complimented Kilmainhamwood on their fantastic workmanship.
Meath got off to a perfect start when Graham Reilly netted in the opening minute but Longford battled back and were on level terms after 15 minutes with points from Brian Kavanagh, Bernard McElvaney and a Paul Barden goal. Glenn Ryan's charges pushed on from there and led comfortably at the break 2-7 to 1-3. Longford's second goal came after a good move and finished by Shane Mulligan.
At half time the Kilmainhamwood U8’s & U10’s entertained the crowd with a well contested match amongst themselves. The kids are the stars of the future and they all hope to represent Meath in the future.

Meath manager Seamus McEnaney re-organised his troops for the second half. Jamie Queeney was moved out to the half back line, Kevin Reilly was moved back to his normal position at full back and Brian Meade was introduced to midfield. But that failed to halt Longford. Their full forward line of Francis McGee, Brian Kavanagh and Sean McCormack gave Meath a lot to think about. A point from Graham Reilly left Meath 2-12 to 1-8 in arrears with ten minutes left. The Royals then hit a purple patch and three points from Paddy O'Rourke and a goal from the very impressive Paddy Gilsenan left a better picture on the scoreboard for Meath.

Stephen Bray made his long awaited return to the county colours on the night..
