On Sunday 3rd August, Athlone GAA in association with St.Hilda's Services in Athlone ran it's Family fun day event in Pairc Chiarain.

After last years hugely successful event, there was an air of expectation concerning the event this year. Alas Mother nature had a huge role to play in the event as one of the worst weekend storms all year forced a large number of Cyclists to cry off on the morning of the event.

The event was 100km and took us to Moate, Clara, Tullamore, Kilcormac, Ferbane, Doon and back to Pairc Chiarain. The Cyclists had to  endure driving wind and rain for most of the route, but this group of Cyclists were made of stern stuff and they stuck to the challenge and completed the demanding event where many more would have wilted long before finish.

Well done to all the Cyclists and the people who filled sponsorship cards as the fundraising will support Athlones St Hilda's Services and build a gym for Athlone GAA Club

Many thanks to Gordon Brett and his team who marshaled the event and to Paul & MaryConnellan & not forgetting their team for the food stop in Kilcormac and the BBQ later back at the Club.

In the afternoon in Pairc Chiarain we had the free Family fun with a big range of inflatables on display.A huge crowd of children turned up as the rain gave way to sunshine.A great time was had by all as evidenced by the demand. The smiles on the kids faces told it's own story. The BBQ was excellent and was very popular all afternoon.

Later that evening we had a DJ and the fun & stories lasted well into the night.

Athlone GAA Cycle Committee would like to thank most sincerely everybody who helped out in anyway shape or form & just to mention a few Colm Quinn for his generous jersey sponsorship and providing us with a safety car for the event,& to all our other Sponsors who have helped make this event happen, also the Red Cross for their assistance on the day, to Padraig Devaney photography for the great memories we will cherish & to the Flynn Brothers Martin & Johnny who were busy with punctures throughout the event, we certainly had a great Team.
