Athlone v Caulry
Athlone’s senior team surrendered their unbeaten record in Division One of the ACFL when they were defeated by a skilful and determined Caulry side in Mount Temple on Friday night.
Caulry raced out of the blocks from the throw-in and had two points on the board after three minutes, while their strong tackling meant that Athlone were not able to settle into any sort of a rhythm. Despite not playing with any great fluidity, Athlone recovered and with 20 minutes gone the sides were level 0-4 apiece, with Athlone’s scores coming from Charlie McMickan, Mickey Greene and two from John Stapleton. However a disastrous five minute spell saw Caulry score 2-3 without reply, as they punished some defensive lapses with two well taken goals. John Stapleton pulled a point back for Athlone but two further Caulry points pushed their advantage out to 10 points as the game approached half time. Athlone needed a boost before the break and Mickey Greene supplied that with a goal from the last kick of the half to leave Athlone trailing by 2-9 to 1-5 at the break.
Encouraged by that goal, Athlone started the second half in a more purposeful mood and, with Caulry content to play on the break against the wind, they started to win a lot more possession around midfield. However a combination of poor decision making and disciplined Caulry defending meant that only two more points had been added, by Paul Bannon and Charlie McMickan, before Caulry opened their account for the second half. Still trailing by six points as the game entered its final quarter, Athlone looked to have got the breakthrough they needed when Mickey Greene was brought down for a penalty, which he crashed to the net to reduce to the gap to a goal, 2-10 to 2-7. Any hope of an Athlone comeback was quashed almost immediately however, when Caulry broke away to win a penalty of their own, which Andy O’Sullivan coolly converted.
To their credit, Athlone continued to press and had a Paul Bannon snapshot found the net instead of the crossbar, they could’ve made the last 10 minutes a lot more uncomfortable for the home side. As it was, despite being camped in their opponents half, Athlone were only able to add three further points from Brian Fogarty, Charlie McMickan and Jordan Marshment, while Caulry added two of their own on the break to leave the final score Caulry 3-12 Athlone 2-10.
Minor League Div 1:
Athlone v The Downs
Athlone's Minors recorded their second win of their Divison 1 league campaign with a come from behind win against a typically strong and skilful Downs outfit on Wednesday evening last.
A shaky start saw Athlone concede two goals in the first five minutes but points from Richie Greene (0-3), Aidy Byrne (0-2) and Alex Molloy closed the gap to one point, 2-1 to 0-6, after 15 minutes. Four unanswered points restored The Downs' advantage to five points but Athlone recovered again and points from Kieran Rigney, Daniel Reid and Richie Greene reduced the gap to two points at the break, 2-5 to 0-9.
Athlone started the second half as they finished the first with a point from Aidy Byrne before Stephen Ward started and finished a superb move to the net to give Athlone the lead. Another Richie point put Athlone three points clear, but almost immediately The Downs responded with another goal to bring the sides level, 3-5 to 1-11.
A nervous closing 20 minutes looked on for Athlone, but a further Richie Greene point restored their lead, before two Aidy Byrne goals in a minute effectively sealed the tie for Athlone. The first was an emphatic finish after a superb long crossfield pass from Daniel Reid, while the second was a clever finish low into the corner through a crowd of defenders. Richie Greene, who was very accurate all night, added another point before Aidy was unlucky not to seal a five minute hat-trick when his rising shot skimmed the crossbar before going over. Leading now by nine points with 10 minutes to play, Athlone still couldn't relax and Conor Devaney had to make a couple of smart saves before further points from Richie Greene, Daniel Reid and Chris Reid saw Athlone home on a scoreline of 3-17 to 3-7.
Overall, despite a shaky start, this was an impressive performance from Athlone, especially as a variety of factors meant that only 16 players were available. As well as showing great skill in slippery conditions, all 16 worked very hard and showed great discipline on a night when the lack of subs meant that any black cards would've left the team short-handed.
Girls U14 League division 2
Loughnavalley v Athlone

Athlone girls competed in the first round of the U14 league division 2 on Tuesday last in Loughnavalley and came out on top on a scoreline of 6-9 to 3-6. Played on a lovely evening but on a very poor pitch Athlone started brightly and scored an early goal from Niamh McGann which was quickly followed up with a point from Grace Halligan. Loughnavalley did score a point but Brionna Geoghegan replied with a goal for Athlone and Nadia Forde added a goal and a point to leave us firmly in control. Loughnavalley did score three late points in the first half to give a half time score of 3-2 to 0-4. The second half was similar to the first with scores for Athlone from Karla McManus 2-1, Brionna 0-1, Niamh McGann 1-3, Grace Halligan 0-1, Lauryn Mitchell 0-1. On the down side the defence conceded 3-2 in the second period but overall it was an excellent performance for the first competitive game of the season and if the girls continue to play with the same determination and skill for the remaining fixtures this year will be a very good one for this talented group.

Girls U14 League Division 4
Tyrrellspass v Athlone

Athlone girls opened their fixtures in division 4 of the U14 league with an excellent game played in Tyrrellspass on Wednesday last. Athlone fielded a completely changed team from the previous game and the girls performed with pride and skill before eventually losing on a scoreline of 2-8 to 1-4. Athlone started brightly and scored an early goal from Ellen O'Connell. However the stronger Tyrrellspass girls took over for the remainder of the half and into the early part of the second half and scored 1-8 without reply. It was then that the character and pride in the jersey kicked in and our girls dominated in all areas and scored points through Ellen O'Connell (2) and Ally Mahon (2) At this stage there was only 4 points between the sides but despite a number of opportunities the girls could not score and the final score was a goal from Tyrrellspass. Given the fact that there were a number of U13 and U12 players making their competitive debut in this grade the management, parents and all associated with the club are very proud of the effort and talent on display. Well done girls.

Athlone hosted the South Westmeath qualifying section of the girls U14 Feile competition in Pairc Chiarain today 26th April. There were six teams in this section including Athlone, Caulry, Garycastle, Goldsmith Girls, Kilbeggan/St Joseph's and Moate. All teams had to play each other and the top two teams in the group qualify for the semi finals which will be played tomorrow 27th April in Kinnegad. All three pitches in Pairc Chiarain were in use and full credit must go to the club for the excellent condition of all the pitches.
Athlone opened their fixtures against Goldsmith Girls and it took us a while to get into our stride but were 1-4 to 0-0 ahead at half time and added a further 3-1 in the second half to leave the final score at Athlone 4-5 Goldsmith Girls 0-0. Garycastle were next up and we started brightly and ran out victors by 8-3 to 1-1. Kilbeggan/St Joseph's were next up and the game was close enough until a late Athlone goal sealed the victory by 1-7 to 0-1. Caulry were then defeated by 4-5 to 0-0. The final game was against Moate and as both teams had won all their games this result would decide who finished top of the group. Moate won the toss and elected to play with the wind and they raced into a half time lead of 2-4 to 0-1. When we had the wind we reduced the deficit to 0-4 points but could not get any closer to them and the final score was Moate 2-5 Athlone 2-1. Therefore Moate will play The Downs in one semi final while Athlone face reigning Feile and county champions Killucan in the second semi final.

We had a panel of 30 players and all 30 featured in at least one of the games. Following their qualification from the south Westmeath group on Saturday, Athlone travelled to Kinnegad early on Sunday to face Killucan in the Feile semi final. Athlone started well and scored an early point through Brionna Geoghegan. Killucan then gained control and scored 1-5 without reply but just before the half time whistle Karla McManus scored a great goal for Athlone to leave the score at the break Athlone 1-1 Killucan 1-5. The second half was similar and although Athlone did score points through Grace Halligan and Brionna Geoghegan and Karla McManus scored another goal, we went down on a score line of 2-9 to 2-3. However as Killucan are the reigning Feile holders and U14 county champions this was an excellent performance from our girls and they made Killucan fight all the way to the final whistle.
Defeat in the semi final placed Athlone in the final of the shield competition where they faced Moate. As Moate had beaten Athlone in the group stage on Saturday they fancied their chances of a repeat. From the throw in Moate won the ball and surged forward to score a point. Then Athlone broke down the field and Grace Halligan scored a goal and although Moate replied with a point it proved to be their last score of the game. The first half scoring was completed by Karla McManus with a point to lave it Athlone 1-1 Moate 0-2. The second half was dominated by Athlone with scores coming regularly from Karla McManus (1-1) Grace Halligan (0-3) Niamh McGann (1-0) Kelly Brill (1-0). This gave a final score line of Athlone 4-5 Moate 0-2.
This was a tremendous achievement for this group of girls. Most of them have been together for the past 3 years and they are developing into a great team. Their determination, skill and passion in the blue and white jersey is fantastic to see. Their parents, mentors and Athlone GAA club are very proud of their achievements this weekend.

Under 10 Boys Athlone v Caulry
Our U10s continued their impressive start to the season with a terrific away day display against a talented Caulry outfit on Sunday morning last. Played in unseasonable sunshine it was a great performance from both Athlone teams and despite the energy sapping heat, the boys kept up the high level of their performance for the full forty minutes. Well done lads and keep up the good work. Thanks to Caulry for their hospitality.
