Friday 4th March in Pairc Chiarain
Junior Ladies 6-14 Shandonagh 3-6
The Athlone ladies had a hard earned and competitive victory on Friday against Shandonagh in the junior ladies league in Pairc Chiarain. Whilst the shoreline suggests a one sided affair the elements played a huge part and Athlone capitalised in the first half with some well taken goals and points. Shandonagh struggled against the wind and when the roles were reversed the Athlone ladies were strong in possession and managed to gain victory despite significant pressure. Final score. 6-14 to 3-6
Elizabeth Stuart Trainor and Ciara Egan were both gave sterling performances but all the squad who took part were outstanding.
Thursday 3rd March in Tyrellspass
U16 Ladies
Athlone v Tyrellspass
Our Athlone U16 girls continued their excellent form in the latest round of their championship in Tyrrellspass last Thursday evening. Played on a dry calm evening but in very poor underfoot conditions Athlone started strongly and piled early pressure on the Tyrrellspass defence and were rewarded by a goal from Brionna Geoghegan which was quickly followed up with a brace from Ciara Egan. Points followed for Athlone from Lauren O'Connor and Brionna. Tyrrellspass did break upfield and scored a goal and a point but it was only a temporary respite as two further goals from Ciara Egan and another for Niamh Byrne as well as two points from Lauren O'Connor pushed Athlone well clear. The last score of the half was a goal for Tyrrellspass leaving the half time score 6-4 to 2-1 in favour of Athlone. The second half followed a similar pattern with a further two goals and a point from Ciara and points from Niamh Byrne (3) and Lauren O'Connor and Kelly Brill. Tyrrellspass scored 1-1 in the second half. The final score was 8-10 to 3-2.
Great credit must go the the entire panel of 27 girls that travelled to the game. All but three of the panel are underage again next year so the future is very bright for the Athlone girls.
Scorers: Ciara Egan 6-1, Niamh Byrne 1-3, Brionna Geoghegan 1-1, Lauren O'Connor 0-4, Kelly Brill 0-1
