A chairde,

Is cúis mhór áthais dom an litir seo a scríobh don ócáid stairiúil seo agus CLG Átha Luain ag ceiliúradh an Tostal i mbliana 2013.

It gives me great pleasure to write these words as part of the unique celebration organised by Athlone GAA club in this 2013, the year of the Gathering.

Many celebrations up and down the country have been organised by our units to coincide with this national celebration of Irishness and not surprisingly we haven’t been far away from it.

That probably comes down to two things – our intrinsic link to the country and its people and the vast network of people around the globe who have brought our games with them and who do so much to give them a profile in places where they would be otherwise be unheard of.

As I write we are preparing for our All-Ireland football semi-finals involving Mayo and Tyrone and Dublin and Kerry and the hurling final pairing of Cork and Clare has been confirmed.

We have an excellent year of attendances and big days to remember thanks in no small part to the emergence of new counties on the provincial circuit.

We are also working hard to secure the ongoing success of the Association and one example of these efforts are our plans to bring all of our GAA codes in under the same umbrella. This would allow us to accurately say that we cater for the entire family in everything we do.

When this letter is opened in 2045 Ireland will no doubt be a different place. Of that we can be sure of.

Will the GAA still be central to Irish life? We certainly believe and hope so.

Technology is sure to have a bearing on the way our games are presented and followed. Our provincial and qualifier systems may have changed by that time but hopefully the same core values that underpin the organisation of our games and activities will remain central to everything we do.

Crucially I hope clubs like Athlone GAA club continue to play the same key role that they have played for so long ensure when people look for past times away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life that they will look to our native games, language and culture for enjoyment and recreation.

Go néirí go geall libh.
