Band of Gold - a Club history
It’s taken 177 years but finally we have a club history of our own.
Band of Gold tells the story of the creation of the Club as a Temperance Society in response to the extreme hardships faced by families as a result of drink. It charts the evolution of the Club from Temperance Society to membership of the Catholic Young Men’s Society before becoming a Sporting Club in the late 1970’s.
The Rowing section covers the formation of the club on the south side of the river, in the docks, to the move to O’Callaghan Strand and the many successes along the way. It includes tables listing every championship crew and every member who represented Ireland. The final section of the book recalls the many other sports which the club participated in over the years including boxing, cricket, hurling, football, soccer, snooker, and table tennis to mention a few.
The Launch by Mayor O’Hanlon will take place in the Club on Friday 25thNovember at 8pm. As the history covers all generations of the club, it would be great to see a big turnout of members from as many decades as possible to share many of the memories captured in the book.
