Hurling League Report

Junior A East Hurling League Final
Kilteely Dromkeen 3-12 Doon 1-17 AET

Kilteely Dromkeen met familiar opposition Doon in the East Hurling League final in Cappamore last Tuesday evening. The weather conditions were quite good after a lot of heavy rain on the Monday and the pitch was in ideal condition. The game started well for Doon as they registered some early scores to lead by 3 points after 10 minutes. Kilteely were minus a few regulars in their starting 15 and had to make some adjustments in team positioning before they settled into the game. The first Kilteely score came from Kieran McCarthy after a good pass from Denis O’Dea. The lads then got a strong foothold in the game, points from Francie Stokes, Padraic Keogh, and Paudie Ahern (2) put Kilteely into a 2 point lead. Darren Connery then saw his goal effort shave the post after being put through with a good pass from full forward Francie Stokes. Both teams got another point a piece to leave the half time score was 0-6 to 0-4 in favour of Kilteely.

The second half began much like the first with Doon getting a couple of scores to level it. Davy O’Neill hit a nice point from distance to restore the lead. Doon had made a few changes at the break and were finding the scores easier to come by. They held a 2 point lead 0-10 to 0-08 with 10 minutes to go. A superb point from Christy O’Dea out near the sideline got the lads going again and Paudie Ahern levelled the scores with a free shortly after. Doon didn’t lie down however and again went into a 2 point lead. Darren Connery popped up with a point with 2 minutes to go before Davy O’Neill won a free which Paudie Ahern converted from distance to level the scores with the final puck of the game. The final score at the end of ordinary time was 0-12 to 0-12.

So to extra time it went, Doon won the toss and opted to play with the slight breeze in the first half. They again started well with 2 points before what looked like a killer score, a goal from their corner forward gave them a 5 point lead only 5 minutes into extra time. The lads were battling hard but scores were not flowing. A long delivery to the square from Dinny Ahern caused trouble in the Doon defence and Davy O’Neill was on hand to score a crucial goal just before the break to leave 2 points between the sides.

The goal just before the break gave the lads a lift and they started the second period of extra time quickly. Another long delivery to the square led to a mix up in the Doon full back line and the ball ended up in the net to give Kilteely the lead. Doon levelled with a point of their own. The decisive score came from Christy O’Dea scored a fantastic goal pulling on the ball first time from 20 yards after a diagonal pass by Denis O’Dea. The ball was past the Doon keeper before he could see it and the lads were three points in front. Doon did get 2 pointed frees after to reduce the margin to one point but Kilteely held on the win the league title for the second time in three years.

We had excellent performances from goalkeeper Barry O’Donnell, Phillip Coffey, Paudie Ahern, and Christy O’Dea with John O’Connell impressing when brought in on the night. It was Paudie Ahern’s first full game back with the club in over 12 months with everyone delighted to see him come through the game and playing well. Gerry Murphy suffered a broken hand on the night and we wish him a speedy recovery.

County League Semi Final
Kilteely Dromkeen 1-10 St Patricks 1-12

On Thursday night just 2 days after winning the east league title, the hurlers were in action again this time in Bruff against St Patricks in the county league semi-final. Once again we were without a number of key players for this game. We started the game very well and the positioning of Padraic Keogh in the full forward line was creating problems for the opposition. Padraic picked up two early points. Paudie Ahern chipped in with a few frees as we opened up an early lead. A good point from Christy O’Dea has us four points ahead after 15 minutes. Then came the first goal of the game, a diagonal pass from Keiran McCarthy was caught by Padraic Keogh and he rifled his shot past the keeper to open up a seven point lead. St Patricks managed a point before the break which was cancelled out by Davy O’Neill to leave a half time score of 1-07 to 0-02.

Early in the second half we lost Davy O’Neill and Kieran McCarthy through injury and St Patricks began to make use of the breeze and narrow the gap between the teams. They had registered 2 points before scoring a goal of their own. The margin was now reduced to two points with 20 minutes remaining. St Patricks kept the pressure on were continuing to score mainly through frees. Paudie Ahern landed a Kilteely free from distance and Padraic Keogh got an excellent point. The sides were level 1-9 apiece with 10 remaining. However St Patricks finished stronger and outscored Kilteely 3 points to 1 in the final minutes to claim a spot in the county league final. The efforts of Tuesday night along with the loss of some key players had caught up with the lads in the second half, they will now focus on the championship first round where they meet Ahane the first weekend in July.
