GAA County Nicknames:

Sligo: “The Yeats Men”

Sligo was where the poet Willam Butler Yeats spent his childhood summers. Its scenic locations fill his early poetry and for this very reason Sligo is now called Yeats County.

Sligo is also a hotspot for GAA nicknames, including:

  • The Herring Pickers (Sligo was home to a thriving fishing industry)
  • The Zebras (a reference to their black-and-white striped kit, zebras are, sadly, not indigenous to Sligo!)
  • The Magpies (also derived from their team colours)

Groaner of the Week:

Did you know that the urge to sing "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" is only ever a whim away? A whim away... a whim away…

Riddle of the Week:

Riddle me, riddle me randio. My father gave me seeds to sow, the seeds were black and the ground was white riddle me that before tonight?

Seanfhocail na Seachtain:

“Tá teach an chearrbhachais ar an ród go hifreann.”

“The gamblers’ den is on the road to hell.”

This or That:

Pick between the two items below and see if you’re right.

On 1/1/2022, what was more Tesla or the combined value of Ford, General Motors, BMW, Volkswagen, Ferrari and Fiat Chrysler?

On This Day: On this day in 1170, Strongbow, a knight of King Henry II, arrived in Waterford at the behest of Dermot McMurrough, an event described in the Annals of Ulster as “the beginning of the woes of Ireland.”

Brain Teaser:

A wealthy family lived in a big circular house. They had a maid, a butler, and a gardener. The parents were going to a party, so they tucked the younger kids into bed and kissed them goodnight and said goodbye, and kissed the older kids goodnight. When the parents came home, all the kids were gone—they had been kidnapped. The authorities ask the butler, maid, and gardener what they were doing at the time of the kidnapping. The butler says he was organizing the library, the maid says she was dusting the corners, and the gardener says he was watering the plants. Who’s lying and actually kidnapped the kids?

Answers to this week’s puzzles:

Riddle of the Week: A flour cake with caraway seeds.

‘This or That’: Tesla was valued at more than all these companies combined, despite producing a tiny fraction of the cars made by the others.

Brain Teaser: The maid—she said she was dusting the corners, but the family lives in a circular house, so there are no corners.
