GAA County Nicknames:

Clare: “The Banner County”

“Up the ban!” is every die-hard Clare hurling fan’s battlecry.

But where does this saying come from? Clare’s nickname has stuck over the years due to its residents’ long-standing political custom of carrying banners – a tradition which stretches back all the way to the Battle of Clontarf in 1014.

Groaner of the Week:

A man walks into a bar, and it's empty - it's just him and the barman. He sits down and orders a drink.

He hears someone whisper, "Pssst...I like your tie."
The man looks around but doesn't see anyone.

"Pssst...that color looks nice on you."

He asks the barman, "Excuse me, but...are you speaking to me?"
The barman rolls his eyes and says, "No, sorry about that. It's the peanuts... they're complimentary."

Riddle of the Week:

Come a riddle, come a riddle, rot, tot, tot. / A little wee man with a red, red coat; / A stick in his hand a stone in his throat. / Come a riddle, come a riddle, rot, tot, tot. What is it?

Seanfhocail na Seachtain:

“Ná lig do rún le claí.”

“Don’t tell your secret to a fence.” (Tell nobody your secret)

This or That:

Pick between the two items below and see if you’re right.

True or False: Apple only allows good characters in TV shows or films use their products e.g. iPhones, Laptops etc. Any bad characters are not allowed use them.

On This Day: On this day in 1993 Dáil Éireann passes a law decriminalising homosexuality.

Brain Teaser:

Four people arrive at a river with a narrow bridge that can only hold two people at a time. It’s nighttime and they have one torch that has to be used when crossing the bridge. Person A can cross the bridge in one minute, B in two minutes, C in five minutes, and D in eight minutes. When two people cross the bridge together, they must move at the slower person’s pace. Can they all get across the bridge in 15 minutes or less?

Answers to this week’s puzzles:

Riddle of the Week: A cherry

‘This or That’: True!

Brain Teaser: Yes, they can cross in exactly 15 minutes. The group of four must follow these three steps.

  1. First, A and B cross the bridge and A brings the light back. This takes 3 minutes.
  2. Next, C and D cross and B brings the light back. This takes another 10 minutes.
  3. Finally, A and B cross again. This takes another 2 minutes.
