GAA Bits & Bobs:

The music for RTE’s The Sunday Game is called Jagariarten written by German big band leader James Last. The music has heralded the start of the programme since it first aired in 1979. Over the years RTE have tried different opening music but in the end have returned to good old faithful Jagariarten!

Groaner of the Week:

After travelling slowly for several minutes, the Cork express train finally stopped in the middle of nowhere. As the guard walked alongside the track, a passenger leaned out the window and asked ”What’s going on?” “There’s a cow on the track,” replied the guard. Eventually the train moved off and resumed it’s slow crawl, only to stop again fifteen minutes later. The passenger saw the same guard walking past and inquired: “What happened? Did we catch up on the cow again?”

Riddle of the Week:

Last Week’s Riddle:

I have a bed but I never sleep. I have a mouth but I never speak. What am I?

Answer: A river

This week’s riddle:

If two’s company, and three’s a crowd, what are four and five?

Seanfhocail na Seachtain:

“Nuair a bheidh an cat amuigh, beidh an luch ag rince.”

“When the cat’s away, the mice will dance.”

This or That:

Pick between the two items below and see if you’re right. Afterall you have a 50/50 chance:

Last week’s ‘This or That’ was:

What can do 0-60mph in a shorter time: a cheetah or a Bugatti Veyron supercar?

Answer: A cheetah can reach 60mph in 2.5 seconds. A Bugatti Supercar takes 3 seconds.

This Week’s ‘This or That’:

By what percentage do traffic collisions increase or decrease when a traffic light junction is replaced with a roundabout: 37% increase or 37% decrease?

On This Day: On this day in 1991 the Birmingham Six are freed after sixteen years of wrongful imprisonment.

Brain Teasers:

Last week’s brain teaser was:

Guess the next three letters in the series GTNTL.

Answer: I, T, S. The complete sequence is the first letter of every word in the sentence.

This week’s Brain Teaser:

Mr. Murphy is trying to find a butler he can really trust. Out of the four candidates, James, Hudson, Paul, and Steven, he knows that two are honest and the other two are compulsive liars. From what each one of them says, can you work out which two are the liars?

JAMES: “Neither Paul nor Hudson tells the truth.”
HUDSON: “If Steven is a liar, then James is trustworthy.”
PAUL: “If, and only if, James is not an honest person, then Steven, too, has a rather loose attitude to the truth.”
STEVEN: “What Paul said is untrue.”

Focal na Seachtain:

In focal na seachtain I have included a word or phrase that you can try and bring into your speech during the week to help build up the ‘cupla focal.’

Given the week that’s in it, there can only be one phrase for this weekend:

“Beannachtaí na Feile Pádraig!”  = “Happy St. Patrick’s Day!”
