As last week ended my supply of quotes from the great Micheál  Ó Muireartaigh, I have introduced a new feature of bits and bobs about the GAA. Any suggestions welcome.

GAA Bits & Bobs:

Up to 60,000 people attended the funeral of the great Christy Ring in March 1979. The graveside oration was given by his teammate and then Taoiseachn Jack Lynch. It included the immortal words: “ As long as young men will match their hurling skills against each other on Ireland’s green fields, as long as young boys swing their camáns for the sheer thrill of the feel and the tingle in their fingers of the impact of ash on leather, as long as hurling is played, the story of Christy Ring will be told. And that will be forever.”

Groaner of the Week:

A patient was sitting in the waiting room of a world-famous specialist. When she was summoned to see the great man, he asked, “Who did you see before coming to me?”

“My family doctor,” replied the patient.

“Your family doctor!” scoffed the specialist. “What a waste of time! Tell me, what sort of useless advice did he give you?”

“He recommended I come to you!”

Riddle of the Week:

Last Week’s Riddle: What can you hold in your left hand but not in your right?

Answer: Your right elbow

This week’s riddle:

What is so fragile that even saying its name breaks it?

Seanfhocail na Seachtain:

“An rud nach fiú a lorg, ní fiú a fháil.”

“The thing that is not worth seeking, is not worth getting.”

This or That:

Pick between the two items below and see if you’re right. Afterall you have a 50/50 chance:

Last week’s ‘This or That’ was: How much did Donald Trump pay on his hairdressing before the 2016 presidential debates. Was it more or less than $50,000.

Answer: He spent $70,000. This is about twice the average full-time American Industrial wage.

This Week’s ‘This or That’:

Who was the first person to top the UK album chart five decades in a row: Paul McCartney or Bruce Springsteen?

On This Day: On this day in 1936 after five years of construction, the Hoover Dam on the Colorado River at the Arizona–Nevada border was completed. It is the highest concrete arch dam in the United States.

Brain Teasers:

Last week’s brain teaser was:

What is 3/7 chicken, 2/3 cat, and 2/4 goat?

Answer: Chicago

This week’s Brain Teaser:

If you have a 7-minute hourglass and an 11-minute hourglass, how can you boil an egg in exactly 15 minutes? (It will be a very hard boiled egg!!)

Focal na Seachtain:

In focal na seachtain I have included a word or phrase that you can try and bring into your speech during the week to help build up the ‘cupla focal.’

“Ádh mór ort” = Good luck to you
