The highs and lows of following Down footballers were manifest on Sunday inside 70 minutes. With Down, chasing a first provincial crown in 26 years, they played exquisite football in the first half, leading by eight points at the break. However, we saw Down crumble in the second half to exit at the Semi-final stage of the Ulster SFC. Nevertheless, congratulations to Cavan on their comeback, and securing a one-point victory. Result Down 1:13; Cavan 1-14. No such problems for the Down Hurlers. They have progressed to the Christy Ring Cup final after a penalty shoot out win over Offaly, a county who not that long ago were at the top table of Senior Inter County Hurling. Well done to RGU’s Tim Prenter. Result Down 2-20; Offaly 1-23. Down eventually winning 3-2 on penalties. Their final against Kildare will be this Sunday in Croke Park, throw in at 4pm.
The Down ladies had a great win over Leitrim on Sunday, in TG4 All Ireland Ladies Intermediate Championship clash, played in Inniskeen. It was a morale boosting eight-point win over Leitrim. Result Leitrim 1-10; Down 3-12.
