The club has heard of the sudden death of Catherine McHale with profound sadness and shock. She was one of the club’s presidents, a founder-member of Royal Gaels and mother to a family of three boys – Padraig, Michael and Joseph and two girls – Ciara and Mary, who had big involvement in the club.
Though she was born in Mayo, Catherine spent most of her life in Meath, as the family moved to a farm in Sneeogue, Duleek when she was only three. She moved to Derrockstown when she married Paddy, who was also from Mayo originally and had also moved east under the Land Commission scheme.
Catherine was a warm-hearted, welcoming, jovial woman, who always greeted everyone with a smile. She was a larger-than-life personality and brought laughter and enjoyment to every gathering. When the children attended primary school Catherine was a regular presence at the school leagues, patrolling the sideline, encouraging and cajoling, but more often in on the pitch among the players as she lost track of her bearings amid the enthusiasm. She could always be relied on for lifts to away matches and refreshments at the annual Blake Cup tournament. She got great joy and entertainment as the club captured three Meath senior championships and a Leinster title in the early 2000s when her sons Michael and Paddy were central to the team’s success.
She was a co-founder of the Royal Gaels in 1985 and acted as joint chairperson along with Ead Kealy. They were both selected to receive the club’s Hall of Fame award in 2017, along with the other co-founders, Ollie Bowe, Ann Power and Maura O’Neill. Catherine was present to witness Royal Gaels achieving the pinnacle of success in Meath football when winning the senior county title last October. Her daughters Mary and Ciara played with Royal Gaels for many years, and both featured on the team which captured junior championship and league titles in 2002. Ciara also captained the team which won the Division 2 League in 2004.
Catherine was the centre and the powerhouse of her family and brought the same qualities of humour, honesty and hard work to every group she was involved with. Our sympathies to Paddy, their sons and daughters Padraig, Michael, Ciara, Joseph and Mary, her sister Breege, brothers Michael, Seamus and Tony, daughter-in-law Aileen and sons-in-law Diarmuid and Julien.
