There were great celebrations all around the parish last Sunday evening as we brought home the u-21 North Board Title after an enthralling battle with our close neighbours Caherlistrane. This was a much anticipated game and the excitement and build up had been building all week. We headed into the match as strong favourites but you wouldn't have thought so during the first half of the game. Caherlistrane came out with fire in their bellies, determined to make a mark on the game early on. They hit the first score from a free, before Aaron McDonagh struck a fine point from almost 45 yards out. It was 0-2 apiece after 10 minutes, both teams keeping things tight early on, our second score coming from a Niall Cunningham long range free from the ground. The next twenty minutes saw us lose our way as Caherlistrane dominated on the scoreboard while we wasted possession and chances in front of goal. Saw impeccable free taking from Caherlistrane saw them lead 0-7 to 0-3 at half time, our only reply a free from Cathal Newell. Things were looking grim at this point as we were struggling all around the pitch, with only Aaron McDonagh's running causing them any problems in defence. A major improvement was needed in the second half and it came immediately with two great scores from Padraig Cunningham to narrow the gap to two. Stephen Monaghan's work around the pitch in the second half was working wonders and he scored an inspirational point to bring us within a point of Caherlistrane. We had the momentum at this point and with 15 minutes left, our full back Darren Moran came up the pitch to score a rare point and the teams were level at 0-8 apiece. We had to wait nearly 5 minutes for the next score when Padraig Cunningham again showed his class in front of the posts and put us in the lead for the first time. A tense final 10 minutes lay in store and the game could have gone either way at this point. Caherlistrane to their credit showed their metal and levelled the game once more as we headed into the last 5 minutes. But team captain Michael Day, who had been having a quiet game by his high standards, carved out a chance and his kick went straight between the posts to put us in front again with time running out. Man of the Match Padraig Cunningham put the icing on the cake of a fine second half team performance with a free in the last minute as the final whistle was greeted with wild celebrations. Joint Captains Alan Meenaghan and Michael Day lifted the cup for Headford and a tour of the parish followed, with many fires lining the road greeting the team home. Well done to the team and management team of Neil Walsh, Bryan Carey, Ronan Higgins and Shane Walsh, and thanks to all who came to support them. The next step is the County Final vs the West Board winners. That game is yet to be fixed. Best for us in a team performance were Padraig Cunningham, Darren Moran, Aaron McDonagh and Richard Fahy. Team - Richard Joyce, Kristopher Cunningham, Darren Moran, Darren Hannon, Daniel Garvey, Dylan Corbett, James O'Brien, Michael Day, Niall Cunningham, Stephen Monaghan, Richard Fahy, Aaron McDonagh, Padraig Cunningham, Alan Meenaghan, Cathal Newell. Subs used - Fergal Carey, Sean Moran.
