Our intermediates got back to league action after the disappointment of last weeks narrow defeat in the quarter final of the championship.

In blustery but fine conditions and on a heavy pitch we overcame Claregalway in another bruising encounter. This, while not for the purists, was an entertaining game with only ever 2 points between the teams. With the aid of the strong breeze the visitors raced into an early lead with points from Mark Rohan and Sean Moran. Claregalway started with the intent of a team that will be meeting our championship conquerors Kilkerrin/Clonberne in the semi final of the intermediate championship next weekend. We then settled well and kicked two nice points from Aaron McDonagh and Michael Day. The next ten minutes were played in the middle third as Claregalway failed time after time to break down our defence and we created our own chances only for the wind to spoil our efforts. Finally Claregalway got two points to extend their lead to two from Barry Goldrick with two sharp efforts on the overlap. The final score of the half fell to Cathal Newell who neatly curled a point judging the wind to perfection leaving it 4-3 at half time with the wind to help us along for the second half.

The second half mirrored the first with our defence standing firm to early Claregalway attacks and some outstanding tackling by the Day brothers in midfield, and our half back line of Ronan Higgins, Eoin McHugh and James O'Brien swallowing up every green and gold jersey that came to attack the momentum was slowly turning in our favour. We then had our best spell of the game and kicked three smashing long range points from David Hannon who had an oustanding performance at wing forward, Cathal Newell and a free from Shane Walsh which left us 2 points up mid way through the second half. A free from Moran and a point from play from centre back Kearney brought the sides level. Claregalway then had their best chance to snatch a goal against the run of play, following a mixup in defence they got through the cover only to find Clive O Sullivan in top form to deny the oncoming forward with a superb save. That then sparked us back to life and we dominated the game from here on to the final whistle. Two more long range points from Evan Flynn and James O'Brien put us two up and with another number of shots that Claregalway's no1 Brian O Donoghue did excellently well to catch from over the crossbar it looked that we maybe start to rue these misses. All Claregalway could add though was a pointed free from a Danny Cummins free giving us a 1 point win and a step closer to securing our Division 3 status for next year.
