Our Intermediates created a small piece of history yesterday as they became the first Headford team since the 1970's to defeat a Senior team in competition with a 2-14 to 1-11 victory at home over St. Michaels in the John Dunne Cup. In what was a perfect evening for football, we started the game very brightly with our 2 goals coming within the first ten minutes. We held a 2-5 to 0-6 advantage at half time. It was clear to see our work rate around the pitch was far superior to the visitors. However, they began the second half with a flourish and steadily narrowed the gap and when they hit the back of the net midway through the second half our lead was suddenly cut to just 3. However, we kicked on with 3 quick fire points to effectively kill off the game as a contest. We eventually took the win by a deserved 6 points. Although we had some fine individual displays, it was an excellent team performance with Headford's hard work the difference between the sides.
Next up for the Intermediates is our first Division 4 league vs Ballinasloe (away) this Saturday.
Headford 1-12
Tuam Stars 3-8
Our Junior B team had a disappointing start to the league after a narrow defeat at home to Tuam Stars. This defeat was largely self inflicted as continuous mistakes from ourselves handed score after score to the visitors, who play at two grades higher than us at championship level. Two soft goals put the Stars in the driving seat midway through the first half,2-4 to 0-1,but our lads bounced back and at half time we trailed 2-6 to 1-4. Our scores came from Alan Meeneghan (1-0), James O Brien (0-2), Dylan Cunningham and Shane Walsh.
With the aid of the breeze we cut the deficit to one point ,1-9 to 2-7, after twenty minutes. However Tuam Stars delivered a killer blow when a dropping ball was fisted to the net for their third goal.Despite kicking the last three points we couldn't get the second goal we needed. Second half scores came from Shane Walsh (0-5), Alan Bane, Paraic Walsh and Eric Flynn. We are away to Oranmore/Maree this weekend.
Our Minors suffered a disappointing loss away to a strong Loughrea team yesterday evening. We started slow and were on the back foot from the off. Only for some great saves from Daire Doherty this game could have been over by half time. We went in at the break 1-5 to 0-3 points down Conor Walsh, Niall Egan and Conor O Malley getting our scores in the first half. Second half was much like the first every bounce of the ball was going in favor of Loughrea and a few early scores from Loughrea put the game beyond us. On a day when we were second best we still had some strong performances, Conor O Malley at midfield did not stop trying until the final whistle Darra Moran too put in a massive work rate and Daire Doherty in goal pulled off some brilliant saves. We now play Clonbur on Monday evening with an outside chance of making a league final.
The u-16's kept their winning run going last Tuesday when they defeated Clarinbridge 3-16 to 1-8 away from home to make it 4 wins from 4 in the league. We raced into a 1-5 to no score lead before the home side had their own purple patch and scored 1-2 without reply. We traded scores until the break and the half time  scoreline read 1-8 to 1-3 in Headford's favour. Again we made a great start to the second half with two early points but once more Clarinbridge replied but this time they managed to reduce the gap to just 3 points midway through the half. It looked setup for a tight, tense finish but our experience from the last 3 games told as we pulled away in the final quarter, finishing the game the much stronger side. Our midfield duo of Louis McGeehan and Donagh Murphy were dominant, Colin O'Reilly held firm at full back ably assisted by Dylan Jacques and Cian Doherty in defense while Niall Egan, James Lee and Cathal Roddy did the damage up front.
The management would again like to thank all parents who helped with transport to and from the game.
A result in our last league game would secure a spot in the league final. That takes place at 7pm next Tuesday at home vs St. James'
