County Intermediate Final Replay: St Michaels’ 1-15 v Caltra 0-15

Fixtures:

Saturday 16th November2024: Connaught Intermediate Semi-Final: St Michaels’ v Crossmolina Deel Rovers In McHale  Park, Castlebar at 1:30pm.

News:

St Michaels’ Intermediate team Got back up to Senior at the 2nd time of asking when they defeated a gallant Caltra team after extra time in the County Final replay on Saturday last in Tuam Stadium. Michaels’ led at half time by 6 points to five, and lost the second half to an identical score-line to leave the sides level at full time on eleven points apiece. Caltra lost a man to a straight red on the 54th minute, and as is often the case, you sometimes wonder if you are better off going a man down & getting the subsequent 50/50 decisions. Michaels’ seemed to be the “leggier” team in the first half of extra time and went two down for the first time in the contest, only for Under 19, Ronan Mac Giolla Rí to give them the lifeline & oxygen they badly needed with a goal. It was now the turn of Caltra to look leggy & flat in the second period of extra time and Michaels’ went on to win by 1-15 to 0-15. This was Michaels’ third game in as many weeks, and it leaves one wondering about the merits of the split season or whatever they call it now. Back in the day, you would be ringing John Power & letting him know that you wouldn’t (and rightly so) be fielding for the 3rd consecutive weekend. Now, St Michaels’ (who had a dressing room resembling a scene from ER... it was M.A.S.H. in my day) are expected to play their Connaught Semi Final on week 4 of 4 and if they win that, they play the Connaught Final on week 5 of 5..... but sure, isn’t it great to be there!

Condolences: It’s not often this bulletin is the bearer of Death Notices, but it would be very remiss of us not to extend our heartfelt condolences to Peter & Tommy Curran and the extended Curran family on the death of their much loved father, granddad & great granddad, Tom Curran. Tom was an avid supporter & sponsor of St Michaels’ and was well able to show that support down through the years through his generous sponsorship and very vocal encouragement on the side-line. May He Rest in Peace. Funeral is Thursday & Friday.
