County Under 19 B Final: Menlough-Padraig Pearses 3-11 - St Michaels’0-14

Fixtures:

Saturday 26th October 2024: County Intermediate Semi-Final: St Michaels’ v Oranmore at 2:15pm in Duggan Park Ballinasloe.

News:

A reliable source told me before the game that 14 (Kian Mitchell) and 12 (Thomas Mellody) for M/PP were the danger men.

Matthew Murphy was detailed to take up 12, and Ronan Mac Giolla Rí had to sacrifice his usual marauding midfield role to man-mark 14, because it proved to be the case that Menlough’s main tactic was to play these men into the scoring zone at all times.

In the first half, this tactic saw them get a 1-1 to no score start (nice opening point from 14, followed by a converted penalty).  However, we settled into the game well, and our defence, having put the necessary mitigations in place, effected good turnovers, channelled them into a few blind alleys, and saw them being pulled more for over carrying a number of times by a diligent referee.

When Michael’s got going they attacked with purpose, always trying to find the man running ahead to carve out scores. We finished the half a point down (0-5; 1-3), and it could have been level (Eanna missing that scorable free before half time). We had the wind though, so our “efficieny”, arguably, wasn’t as good as theirs - 2 wides, and a few short too. We looked the better team, but with their potency, there was also a feeling that we might need a goal to win this.

Second half:

We make the better start - an immediate equaliser, followed by a few missed chances. But then, another dagger - a bizarre soloing error by an attacking defender, gifts the ball to them, and to compound it the poor lad slips. It happens in their half of the field, but everyone is off guard, and they have the quality to get another goal on the break.

Again we dominate to get it back level and then go ahead for the first time with 4 unanswered points as we headed into the last quarter.  We looked like we’d push on now, but instead they kick 3 points in a two-minute spell to go two ahead.

We resume our dominance, and go level again, but again, on the break, 14 has a goal chance defenced brilliantly by James O’Flaherty, so he has to resort to take a point.  Despite us having the greater of the chances (albeit JJ had to make a brilliant save for a 45), this one point lead remained until the last kick of the game, when Sean Keane elevated St. Michael’s squeaky bums into that turbulent orbit of joyful relief that comes with having got out of jail.  Sean Keane had replaced Kane Campbell with about 15 to go, and made a good impact. Did really well to get himself in position and had the courage to shoot. Some game! Still feel we are the better team, but they score goals ruthlessly, while we missed several chances.

Extra time

They started very well - a purple first period of extra time, making good use of the wind advantage to take a 4 point lead (and an extra man!) into the second period. The loss of Sean Keane to a black card was probably the biggest hill to climb by now. We also lost Cian Cloherty for a period of repair to a calf injury.  In fact, overall, the bodies and legs seemed to be struggling, and though we got a point back, and had another few shots wide, their third goal put the game beyond reach.

Team: JJ. Philips, M. Murphy, J. Keane & J. O’ Flaherty. C. McNeill, C. Horan & C. Cloherty. J. Summerville & R. Mac Giolla Rí. M. Sheridan, K. Campbell & K. Keady-Coakley. J. Keenan, E. Coffee & J. Coyle.

Scorers:

Eanna Coffey 0-7 (1xM, 2xF, 1x45)

James Summerville 0-3

Kane Campbell 0-1

Cian Cloherty 0-1

Manus Sheridan 0-1

Sean Keane 0-1

Subs:

Sean Keane (second half) for Kane Campbell

Kane Campbell (back on) for Cian Cloherty (injury in ET)

Cian Cloherty (back on) for James O’Flaherty

Luke Carroll for Cian McNeill.

Míle Buiochas to our Rúnai (Lorcan) for the above report.

It’s all about the M6 this Saturday as St Michaels’ Intermediates for the 4th time this year travel to Ballinasloe to play their County Semi-Final against first round conquerors, Oranmore. We need to see and hear all of our supporters at this vital game (Aren’t they all vital from now on!). Atonement for their last 10 minutes in that 1st round game should be the motivation factor for the team in this instance.
