St Michaels’ Senior team overcame Spiddal last Saturday in Pearse Stadium in round 2 of the League Championship to leave the matter of qualification for the next round in their own hands. Once Darragh O Malley scored an early goal, St Michaels’ seemed to be always in control, until the third quarter, where they conceded 6 unanswered points to see the game be all square towards the finish. Then in the final quarter, O’Malley’s replacement, Brian Harlowe, scored his side’s second goal with his first touch to all but seal victory. St Michaels’ led 1-3 to 1 after the 1st water break, 1-6 to 4 at half time, 1-8 to 10 at 2nd water break and 2-9 to 12 points at full time. A win over Milltown in two weeks (easier said than done!) will see Michaels’ go through. Team: S. Daly, C. Meagher, S. Maloney & Eoin Day. E. O’ Donnell, B. Madden & J. McNicholl. D. Cunnane & F. Daly. C. Gallagher, E. Brannigan (1) & D. Connaughton. G. Higgins 4 (2f), E. Hoare 2 (1f) & D. O’ Malley 1-02. Subs: E. Kerin, S. Connaughton, B. Harlowe 1-0, J. Downes & P. Tormay (ko).
St Michaels’ Junior C team made history at the start of this year when they became the first ever Thirds adult Team at the Club. On Sunday last, they further embellished this accolade when the won the West Board Junior C Championship, after they defeated Gaeil na Gaillimhe on a score line of 3-13 to 2-10. They will play Cortoon in the County Final in two weeks’ time.
The Club’s Under 16s had a hard-fought draw against Micheál Breathnachs at Inverin On Friday last, where they scored 3-11 to their hosts’ 4-8.
St Michaels’ Under 14s are at home to the Claregalway B Team at the Westside this evening (Tuesday 21st at 6:30 pm).
Then on Wednesday evening at the earlier time of 6:15 the Club’s Under 19s entertain Oranmore in the West Board Semi-Final.
St Michaels’ Minor Ladies had a huge victory over Killanin in the County Final this evening in Westside. This is a young team and no doubt are hoping to be very competitive in future Minor competitions as no less than 13 of the panel are plying in the Under 16 county final on Thursday next against Dunmore in Dunmore. The very best of luck to them.
