Congratulations to our minor team who won the County final last Sunday, defeating the reigning champions, Salthill-Knocknacarra on a final score of Corofin 2-8 to Salthill-Knocknacarra 0-10.
The team, captained from midfield by Conor Cunningham, came from 1 point down with 15 mins to play to win by 4 points. This was a superb all-round display from the team, who had entered the game as outsiders to a highly fancied Salthill-Knocknacarra team. Great credit is due, not just to the seventeen players who featured in the final, but also to the entire panel, all of whom put in tremendous work all year to achieve this win. Well done also to manager, Brian Murphy and selectors, Jimmy Sice and Gary Delaney.
The Corofin goalie, David Wall was called upon early on the make a vital save from a promising Salthill attack. Playing with the wind in the first half, Corofin opened the scoring with a well taken point from Oisín Murphy. The scores were tied at one point each after 12 mins, when a 45 from Jason Leonard dropped into the square. Following a goalmouth scramble, Dylan Wall finished the ball to the net. Corofin added two frees and a point from play, all by Jason Leonard, while Salthill replied with three points, to leave the half time score at 1-4 to 4 points.
Salthill dominated the early exchanges in the second half and took the lead for the first and only time in the game after eleven minutes. The defining score of the game came from a superb move by the Corofin team. A kickout was won by Jason Leonard, who dispatched the ball to Stephen Broderick. His quick pass was collected by Colin Brady, who found Martin Farragher with an excellent through ball. Farragher rounded his man to finish superbly to the net. Corofin had now re-established their lead, which they were never to surrender. Jason Leonard pointed three more frees and the final Corofin score was a point from play by Martin Farragher. Salthill managed only two points in the final 20 minutes played. This was due in no small way to the excellent work by the Corofin defence led by full back, Cathal Reilly and centre back Liam Silke.
Jason Leonard, who scored 6 points, received the man of the match award.
On Sunday night the team and supporters did a tour of Sylane, Belclare and Corofin. A big thank you is due to all the people who came out and lit bonfires and gave the lads a great welcome home. It was very appreciated by the club and also thanks to Pat Burke of Burkes Bus for driving the team during the day and bringing them around the parish.
