GAMES
On Friday evening, the Intermediates got their Championship campaign off to a winning start against Moycullen at Kenny Park with a scoreline of 3-12 to 1-9. Goals from Patrick Egan and Robbie Winston in the 1st half with Brian Raftery capping of a great individual performance with the teams 3rd goal in the 2nd half. The result puts them joint top of Group 1 with Glenamaddy.
The Seniors continued their winning start to their 2022 Championship campaign with a great win over Noamh Anna, Leitir Móir in Pearse Stadium on Saturday. After a sluggish start the lads gathered momentum and eased into a commanding lead by halftime with the scoreline at 1-12 to 0-2, goal from Dylan McHugh. The 2nd half continued as the 1st half ended with Corofin adding to the lead. The game finished 3-24 to 0-9 with 2nd half goals from Gary Sice and Martin Farragher. The Seniors now sit at the top of Group 1 with Tuam Stars and Moycullen all on maximum points. We are ahead on score-difference only.
On Sunday the Junior team hosted Menlough in Corofin pitch for the start of their Championship campaign. Despite a great performance from the lads and goals from Finn McIntyre (x2), Cathal Newell and Conor Melia, Menlough proved too tough an opposition for our lads with the scores finishing as 4-8 to 2-22. The Juniors are now sitting 3rd in Group B after the opening round of fixtures.
The U-19’s Championship Round 3 fixture is Wednesday 17th August (this evening) against Dunmore MacHales in Dunmore.
UNDERAGE NOTES
A very successful Cúl Camp took place in Belclare last week. 235 boys and girls enjoyed blistering sunshine and a great week of coaching and fun. Great praise must go out to everyone involved from those who helped out with traffic management and parking. We especially thank all the young coaches who did a great weeks work and were so nice to all the children. A word of thanks also to the 235 children who were a credit to their families and Club with exemplary behaviour and willingness to learn.
The U-8 and U-9 boys played a blitz with Annaghdown and Headford in Belclare on Saturday morning under glorious sunshine. All the players had a super time and it was a great morning of football to finish off a great week of Cúl Camp.
The U-13’s played Claregalway on Saturday in their Quarter-Final. The game was in contention right up to the end and played in very hot conditions. The boys came out victorious with a scoreline of 4-5 to 1-8. Well done boys.
SYMPATHY
The club offers its sympathy to the families and friends of the following who have died recently:
Margaret Burns, Stradbally; sister of Marie Murphy, Biggera
Mattie Murphy, Caherhugh. The Club extends its sympathy to his wife Ann daughters Marie, Angela, Carmel, sons Francis and Brian and to the extended Murphy family. Mattie had the distinction of captaining Corofin to their first minor (U18) County title in 1962 when they defeated Mountbellew Moylough in the North Board final and Galway city side St Augustines in the County finals. The final against St Augustines in Tuam Stadium is still described by those who attended as one of the greatest games of football played in Tuam Stadium. This title win was the springboard for subsequent success at adult level with the club emerging from Junior ranks in the following year thus achieving Senior status which has been retained ever since.
May they rest in peace.
