CLUB NOTES:

Our U14 panel travelled to Sligo last Saturday to take part in the All Ireland Feile Tournament. Our group games took place in Drumcliff where we received a great welcome from the host club, Drumcliff-Rosses Point. All the players were presented with commemorative boot-bags by Drumcliff Rosses Point clubman Neil Ewing, the Sligo senior football captain who spoke very warmly and encouragingly to the players.

After a nervous start the team kicked off with a good win in the first game against a Sligo combined selection, however, we were beaten by an exceptionally strong Douglas (Cork) team in our second group game. A win for Douglas in their final game ensured we would finish second in the group, qualifying for a Shield semi-final V Na Fianna (Dublin) at the new Sligo centre of Excellence at Scarden.

The semi-final was a very tight affair with excellent quality football on show from both teams. Corofin played with a strong breeze in the first half but only led by one point at half time. However, a fantastic second half performance ensured that Corofin came through in the end after a superb game – widely praised from all in Scarden as the game of the day.

The reward for beating Na Fianna was a final showdown against Skerries (Dublin) who had beaten this team at the final of the Colm Cooper tournament in Killarney last September. While Corofin carried some injuries into the game and tiredness was a factor, it didn’t change the fact that Skerries were the better team on the day and deservedly won out in the end.

The experience overall was fantastic for the players and it is a huge honour for them to have tested themselves against the very best teams in the country whilst representing their club and county and they should be very proud of how they performed in all the games.

We congratulate the team on their displays at the Féile and thank their mentors and parents who supported them.

‪Well done to our juniors who defeated Tuam Stars by 4-10 to 3-11 in the league (division 5, North), played in Tuam Stars pitch on Sunday.  Their next game is against Milltown at 8.00 pm on Friday evening in Corofin.

Our seniors return to action when they play Killannin in the league (division 1) at 8.00 pm on Tuesday next in Corofin.

We send best wishes to Daithí Burke and the Galway hurlers who take on Wexford in the Leinster final at 4.00 pm on Sunday.
