Glengad United

Club History..

Glengad United Football Club was formed in 1976 and entered the Inishowen League for the 1977-78 season for the first time. The club initially played their home games in Barr’s Field however within a few seasons the pitch did not meet Inishowen League standards and the club was forced to play their home games in Tremone until the development of Cholmcille Park, formerly Barr’s Field, in 1992.

In the 1982-83 season under the management of John Coyle the club won their first honours when they won the inaugural Fr. O’Gara Cup and the Inishowen League First Division to complete the double for the first time in their history. After this point the clubs fortunes declined but received its biggest blow in 1987 with the death of founder member Barney McDaid (Cooper) along with his sons Paddy and Charlie and crew member David McDaid in a boating accident. The club reorganized after this tragedy and in the1990-91 season under the management of Paddy McLaughlin (Den) Glengad completed the League and Cup double for the second time.

In the 1997-98 the club won its third double with the emergence of a very talented group of youth team players forming a major part of the squad. After two seasons in the Premier Division, Glengad were relegated to the First Division where they remain at present. In the 2002-03 season the club continued their long association with the Fr. O’Gara Cup when under Paddy McDermott (M) the club won the cup for the fourth time.

Under the management of Davie Doherty (B) Glengad retained the Fr. O’Gara Cup in the 2003-04 season. With a strong emphasis on youth development and with teams playing at Under-10 to Under 18 level and a Reserve and First team, the club undertook to develop a new playing facility in the Crua to cope with the number of games being played each year. Glengad United played their first game at the new pitch against Dunree United in the 2008 West End League Cup which ended in a 2-2 draw. They also beat Illies Celtic 3-2 in their first Inishowen League First Division game of the 2008-09 season to be played at the new development in the Crua.
