Match Report

J.F.C. (A) Relegation match

           Tinryland 1-16            Old Leighlin 1-4

The most important weekend of the year for our club began on a positive note when Tinryland avoided the trapdoor down to Junior B with a comfortable win over Old Leighlin at the training centre on Friday 29th September.

Tinryland were never headed after Keith Jackson landed a 45 in the 2nd minute which was followed 2 minutes later by a brilliant Glen Doyle point and a mark by Conall O’Shea which he converted in the 10th minute. Old Leighlins attempts to break through were turned over on all occasions before Gearoid Foley opened their account in the 15th minute. The next score then came to Tinryland and was a beauty by Shane Webb after great play by Cathal O’Toole, Padraic Whelan and Conall O’Shea. Old Leighlin veteran Richie Burke then doubled his teams account when he came forward to point after good play by wing back Evan O’Callaghan. The closing stages of the half saw Tinryland eventually find their scoring boots having clocked seven wides up to then. A brilliant Padraic Whelan point in the 29th minute after good play by Shane Webb and Adam Dunne was followed by 3 quick points via Shane O’Neill, Keith Jackson and Alan Barrett which left the scoreboard reading 0-8 to 0-2 even though the scoreboard keeper was showing a point less for Tinryland.

When referee Eoin Evisson re-started proceedings Tinryland were quick out of the blocks with a great Cathal O’Toole point quickly followed by the first goal of the match by Tinryland’s recent signing Kyle Hogan who was a menace throughout to the Old Leighlin defence. Tinryland were motoring now and Kyle Hogan scored another point in the 35th minute followed by 2 more class points from Keith Jackson and Padraic Whelan together with a quick point from recently introduced John Paul Moore after great play by Shane O’Neill.

Tinryland then introduced Eoin Townsend for Shane O’Neill who had done well but against the run of play Old Leighlin rattled Evan Doyle’s net via Evan Callaghan which left 11 points separating the sides at this stage. Two quick points from John Paul Moore and Alan Barrett restored the Tinryland momentum before Liam Coghlan replied with a point for the men from Molaise Park. Tinryland then emptied the bench and introduced a trio of fresh legs in Brian McGrath, Vivian Nixon and Luke Broderick who was involved in Keith Jacksons final score to see Tinryland run out easy winners and guarantee top level junior football for their 2nd team in 2024.

Outstanding for the winners who had 10 different scorers were Adam Dunne, Peter Doran, Padraig Townsend, Shane Webb, Keith Jackson, Glen Doyle, Padraig Whelan, and Kyle Hogan.

Old Leighlin were best served by veteran goalie James Clarke, Evan Callaghan, John Hayden, Declan Kelly, Michael Meaney and Declan Gough.
