Match report

Carlow S.F.C.

         Eire Og 2-17               Tinryland 0-7

Tinryland were on the receiving end of a heavy loss to Co. champions Eire Og when the final group 2 game of the Michael Lyng Motors S.F.C. was played out at a somewhat silent Netwatch Cullen Park on Friday 15th October. At no stage in this encounter did Tinryland supporters have cause for much cheer as Eire Og went through the gears to inflict a heavy defeat on the men in blue and white.

The reigning champions got on the scoresheet at an early stage and were 4 points ahead by the 9th minute courtesy of some great point taking by midfielder Jordan Morrissey and wing forward Ross Dunphy. Diarmaid Walshe opened the Tinryland account with a long range free in the 10th minute which was quickly matched by an Adam Murphy free for the town team. Tinryland’s best move of the match resulted in a Keith Jackson point.

Eire Og then began to turn the screw and the first goal arrived after 17 minutes when Colm Hulton rounded Tinryland keeper Chris Townsend. Another Hulton point seconds later saw the game already gone from Tinryland’s grasp before the first water break.

Ross Dunphy who impressed throughout this one sided game showed his class when he waltzed through the Tinryland defence in the 23rd minute to rattle the net once again, a score which put the defending champions 10 points clear. 4 further points were added before the interval to leave the half time score Eire Og 2-9 Tinryland 0-2.

When the 2nd half began Tinryland had introduced Danny Moran into the fray and despite another Eire Og point 40 seconds after the re-start Tinryland managed to contain their physically stronger opponents to only 1 more point in that 3rd quarter. During this period of play Tinryland added 2 Niall Lowry points from placed balls with Keith Jackson and Diarmaid Walshe also raising white flags before the 2nd water break.

With the game well and truly gone from their reach Tinryland management introduced Paddy Regan, Matthew O’Toole and Mark Morrissey into the play as thoughts turned towards the quarter final in 2 week’s time. Tinryland closed the scoring with a Keith Jackson point which brought his own tally from play to 4 points and he is one of the few Tinryland players who can be satisfied with his work on a night that is probably best forgotten. It is 99% certain that Tinryland will qualify for a quarter final unless O’Hanrahans can beat Palatine by more than 20 points in this weekend’s final group 2 game.

Tinryland: Chris Townsend, Cathal Gaffney, Conor Ryan, Michael Hosey, Conor O’Toole, Mikey Byrne, Cian Lawlor, Shane Redmond, Keelan Gaffney, Diarmaid Walshe 0-2F, Ronan Curran, Rory Doyle, Niall Lowry 0-2F, Keith Jackson 0-4, Cormac O’Brien.
