ACFL Division 1:

St Lomans Mullingar 2-20 Mullingar Shamrocks 2-04

Last Tuesday evening our neighbors Mullingar Shamrocks made the short trip from Springfield in what was a highly anticipated derby. The sides had not met since the 2019 Championship. The Hosts started strongly, and raced into an early lead scoring five unanswered points through the returning Sam McCartan and four from sharpshooter Shane Dempsey before Shamrocks got on the scoreboard through two Denis Corroon scores.  The Saints hit another five on the trot with TJ Cox and Shane Dempsey hitting doubles either side of a point from Danny McCartan. Shamrocks Wing-Back Dillon Matthews hit a late first half goal followed by another Corroon point to leave four between the sides at half time.

Declan Kelly’s Charges got the first score of the second half through another Dempsey free, but the Visitors replied with a second goal through Dean Moore leaving two points between the sides suddenly. However, the Blues responded perfectly with a goal of their own through Ryan Jones. The Home side added another four points on the trot through Shane Dempsey, TJ Cox, Danny McCartan and Ryan Jones. Jordie Ward got shamrocks fourth point which turned out to be their last. It was one way traffic for the rest of the game. The Blues finished strongly with 1-05. Points from Sam McCartan, Paul Whelehan, Shane Dempsey, Peter Foy and Ryan Jones. Followed by a late goal from Sam McCartan saw the Blues win comfortably in the end.

On the night Sean Kelly, Conor O’Donoghue, Eoghan Hogan, Ryan Jones and Danny McCartan were all excellent on the night. In truth the Blues were excellent as a unit but there were phenomenal individual performances from Sam McCartan and Shane Dempsey. Dempsey was deadly up front and finished with a tally of nine points on the night, giving an exhibition of scoring. Sam McCartan covered every blade of grass also ending with 1-02 on the scoreboard, less than 48 hours after playing 70 minutes for Westmeath in the Leinster Semi-Final was a testament to the supreme athlete he is. Despite all the positivity the task is simple for the Blues next time out, they need to beat Rosemount to stay in Division 1. Details will be confirmed during the week.
