St Lomans GAA Club Notes 21/02/2022:
ACFL Division 1:
St Lomans Mullingar 0-07 Garrycastle 0-06
Last Friday evening in the midst of Storm Eunice, we saw a repeat of last year’s championship Final between St Lomans Mullingar and Garrycastle in the 2022 Curtain raiser for. It was certainly not an ideal night for football, with atrocious weather conditions in Lakepoint Park. Both sides were visblly undercooked following the late end to last year’s championship.
There were very few scores in the first half with both sides trading three scores each in the first half. The opener from Peter Foy and a double from Kelvin Reilly made up the scores for the hosts, with Reilly’s first effort the pick of the bunch after a beautiful dummy, he curled a left footed shot between the posts. Both teams went in level at the interval with three points on the board each.
The Second half followed a similar rhythm to the first with scores at a premium. Both teams traded two scores each with David Whelan and Shane Dempsey on target for the Blues. Dempsey pointed again to the give the Saints a slender advantage, before Peter Foy doubled the lead with a superb effort to leave Lomans two up in the closing stages. The visitors reduced the deficit with a late free but it was a mere consolation as Declan Kelly’s men held on for a one point win.
It wasn’t a game for the history books but both sides deserve credit for braving the conditions alone. In terms of individual performances, the experience of Kelvin Reilly and Shane Dempsey in partilcuar was probably the deciding factor, in an encounter which could have easily gone either way. No doubt we will encounter Garrycastle again who are always there or thereabouts when it comes to closing stages of the Senior Championship. Finally, we wish Jack Geoghegan a speedy recovery after he sustained an injury on the night. St Lomans face Shandonagh next week with date and time to be confirmed.
