Minors defeated at Semi-Final Stage
Glenroe minor hurlers were defeated by Dromin/Athlacca in the county semi-final of the 12-a-side championship, which was played in
Knocklong on Saturday afternoon last.
Dromin/Athlacca 1-23 Glenroe 1-10
Mark O’Connell scored the opening point from a 40m free in the 1st
min. Dromin/Athlacca responded with three points, two of them from frees. A
second point by Mark O’Connell from a 50m free on David Lane reduced the margin
to one point in the 8th min. Athlacca dominated play for the
following 10 mins. scoring six points in succession. The Glenroe players found
it very difficult to adjust to the heavy underfoot conditions. Both sets of
backs conceded frees which resulted in Mark O’Connell scoring five points for
Glenroe and Athlacca responding with five points. The half-time score was 0-14
to 0-8 in Athlacca’s favour, with all of Glenroe scores coming from Mark
O’Connell.
Dromin/Athlacca extended their lead early in the second half with two
points. Mark O’Connell pointed from a 50m free in the 33rd min to
keep Glenroe six points adrift. Athlacca replied with a point and it took a
great save by David McCarthy, in the Glenroe goal, to deny them a goal at the
expense of a 65m free. Both teams scored a goal in the 44th min but
the game was over as a contest at this stage. Dromin/Athlacca added further
points to win by a comfortable margin in the end.
Team: D McCarthy, K Maguire, G Casey, S Kelly, J Crawford, P McSweeney, C
