Tell Labs Carlow Ladies Football Round 3

                         Bennekerry/Tinryland 1-19                       Eire Og 2-3

This 3rd round game played in ideal conditions at Rathcrogue on Saturday last was in reality a semi-final with the winners guaranteed a place in this years Co. final. A much- improved Eire Og last year’s Intermediate champions showed they meant business as early as the opening minute when their corner forward Beth Evisson rattled the BT net. The home side replied with their opening point from their corner forward Sinead Hayden which was quickly followed by another from Sarah Nolan. By the 3rd minute in this all action opening BT were level with an excellent Cliodhna Ni Shea point before Eire Og regained the advantage with a well worked point from Cariosa Morohan.

Eire Og were competing well at this stage but it was the home side that dominated the next 5 minutes scoring 3 unanswered points via Ni Shea, Katie Bullen and Ni Se again to stretch into a two  point lead. Eire Og then rocked the home side when their full forward Sarah Furey fielded a high ball and won a penalty which was converted by Beth Evisson to change the leaderboard once again. BT responded with a goal from Katie Bullen but the score was disallowed by referee Jonathon Murphy who deemed the BT full forward was in the square.  The closing stages of the opening half saw Bennekerry/Tinryland finally find their scoring boots and they tagged on 4 points via Sinead Hayden, Ruth Bermingham, Cliodhna Ni Se and Sarah Nolan before referee Murphy sounded the half time whistle. Half time score Bennekerry/ Tinryland 0-10, Eire Og 2-1.

The 2nd half began with another BT point from Cliodhna Ni Se which was responded to by a wonderful Edel Hayden point for the Carlow town team after a great delivery from midfield.

This score seemed to spur Eire Og and another point from Cariosa Morahan left only 2 points separating the teams with 20 minutes remaining. Bennekerry Tinryland then introduced the experienced Elaine Ware into the fray and within seconds their scoring machine began to spring into action. Two quick points from Sinead Hayden and Ni Se extended the lead back out to 4 points as Eire Og introduced Lucy Lanigan from the bench. BT were up a few gears now and further points in a 5- minute spell from Orla Woods, Cliodhna Ni Se and Sinead Hayden extended their advantage to 7 points with 10 minutes remaining. Eire Og goalkeeper Roisin Ahern brought off a wonderful save from Hayden in the 21st minute to deny the home side their first goal. That green flag eventually arrived with 5 minutes left when Hayden crashed the ball past Ahern after great play by Ruth Bermingham and Katie Bullen. The final stages of this enjoyable game saw further BT points from Ni Se as Eire Og introduced a further sub. In Abbie Cooney.
