Under-16 Competitions Begin

On Monday last, our under-16s travelled to play Bruree in the second round of the under-16championship. Despite the cold and wet conditions, we had an excellent turnoutof players. All of the panel turned up so the selectors had a difficult problemas to who to leave out.

Glenroe playedwith a strong wind in the first half, but were slow to settle. After 10minutes, Bruree led 2-2 to 0-2, both of Glenroe’s points coming from CiaranKelly.

By now, we werebeginning to get a grip on the game, and after some fine work at midfield,Darren Hennessy got our opening goal. In injury time of the first half, EdmondO’Sullivan got a second goal to level the scores at half-time, 2-2 apiece.

Playing againstthe wind in the second half, the selectors made four positional changes. Westarted well with a free in the first thirty seconds which Ciaran Kellypointed. We were playing well, keeping our opponents at bay until the eighthminute when Bruree drew level with a point. Bruree scored their third goal aminute later. This score set us back as we were doing well up till this. Wewere very unlucky in the thirteenth minute when Ciaran Kelly broke through thehome team’s defence and had his shot for goal deflected back out, Sean McGrathgathered the rebound and had his effort deflected out for a 65. A few minuteslater, Bruree stretched their lead to four points with another score. A fastpuckout fell short and Bruree punished us with a fourth goal. They addedanother point in the sixteenth minute to stretch their lead to eight points. Afew minutes later, Bruree got a soft free when we overcarried the ball out ofdefence. The free was tapped over the bar. With time nearly up, we camedesperately close to getting another goal when Sean McGrath broke through andpassed to Gearoid Moynihan who saw his attempt at goal strike the upright. Ininjury time, Bruree had another point to win by a score of 4-7 to 2-3. The gamewas a lot close than the scoreline suggests, and with alittle luck, we couldhave been a lot close at the finish.

The Glenroe teamwas:

Padraig McGrath,James Kelly, Michael John Farrell, James Armstrong, Sean McGrath, Conor Fenton,Darren McCarthy, Ciaran Kelly, Darren Hennessy, Edmond O’Sullivan,  Ryan Sheehan. Subs: Eoin Gallahue, GerardLeahy, Gearoid Moynihan, Sean McGrath.
