ACFL League Results

Our Division 3 side recorded a comprehensive win over Bunbrosna on Tuesday evening away. Well done to all. Team and scorers: Senan O’Driscoll, Keith Carroll, Eoin Moore, Liam Faulkner, Eoghan Murray, Brendan Flynn, Oisín Loughlin (0-1), Brendan Murtagh (0-1), Dean Egerton (0-4), Phillip Martin(0-3), Shane Carroll, Oisín Raleigh(0-1f), Jack Carroll(0-1), Ben Harte(0-3), Tom Tuite(0-4 2f). Subs: Oisín Murphy (0-2) Trevor Fitzpatrick, Josh Murtagh(1-0), Nathan Lynott

The Division 3s were also in action on Saturday away to St. Malachys. The lads were unlucky not to come away with all three points on offer but had to settle for a draw in an evenly contested game. Final score 3-09 to 1-15 Team: Senan O’Driscoll, Trevor Fitzpatrick, Eoghan Moore, Cian Carty, Andrew Shaw, Brendan Flynn, Nathan Lynott, Oisín Loughlin(1-0), Harry Caulfield, Phillip Martin, Oisín Murphy, Josh Murtagh(1-0), Ben Harte(1-03), Shane Carroll, Dylan Carroll(0-4 2f). Subs: Jack Carroll(0-2), Kevin Bell, Keith Carroll, Shane Egerton, Oisín Murray, Liam Faulkner

The Division 4 side defeated Moate away on Thursday evening with a hard fought, gutsy performance winning by a solitary point. In a game that had plenty of drama with Moate blazing a penalty over the bar in the first half and The Downs losing two players in quick succession to 2 yellow cards midway through the second half. Moate levelled the match in the last few minutes but a hallmark of the game was the composure of The Downs to retain possession and patiently wait for an incisive pass to kick the winning score. This was by far this squad’s best performance of the season with the bare minimum of players to select from. Well done to all. Team: Senan O’Driscoll, Keith Carroll, Shane Egerton, Nathan Lynott, Scott Murtagh, Brendan Flynn, Eoghan Moore, Brendan Murtagh(0-2), Josh Murtagh, Philip Martin(0-3), Jack Carroll (1-04 1f), Cian Carty, Ben Harte (1-04)

And last but not least our Division 1 side had to settle for a draw on Friday evening in their game away to Shandonagh. This is the first points dropped by the Division 1 side that had a 100% record up until now. Shandonagh’s Tom Molloy kept his composure to kick a late equaliser and earn a share of the points for his side. Final score was The Downs 1-11 to Shandonagh’s 2-03.

Under 15 Division 2 League Final

Congratulations to our U15 boys who have reached the Division 2 League final following the final round of League games this week. The final will take place this Tuesday May 17th away to our near neighbours Killucan. This promises to be a very good game against high calibre opponents. Both sides have met a couple of times already this season where the spoils were shared equally on both occasions. Best of luck to the players and management team!!

The Downs Ladies LGFA

The Downs Ladies Division 4 team were in action on Saturday evening last away to Athlone. Despite their best efforts the girls came off second best on the night. Well done to Athlone.

The Division 1 side take on Moate this Tuesday evening in Moate at 7.30 pm –all support welcome.

The Senior championship draw took place this week. The Downs Ladies were drawn against Garrycastle in the opening round at home on July 7th. We wish Johnny Murray and his management team the very best of luck in their preparations.

The Downs U14 girls had a very impressive, albeit, hard fought win away to Ballycomoyle on Tuesday evening last in the League. Final score 4-08 to 3-04 in favour of The Downs.

Hard Luck

Commiserations to Jack Cooney and the Westmeath footballers on losing out to Kildare in the Leinster semi-final in Croke Park last Sunday. The Downs were very well represented with 6 clubmen involved. Hard luck to players; Johnathan Lynam, Luke Loughlin, Trevor Martin, Charlie Drumm and Kevin O’Sullivan and not forgetting kit man Paddy Walsh.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Darragh Egerton and Niall Mitchell two of our senior footballers who were both part of the Westmeath hurling team that drew with Wexford last Saturday evening in Cusack Park in the Leinster championship. Super result

We also congratulate four of our young LGFA U14 footballers; Emma Lagan, Lauren English, Kayla McHugh and Isobéil Murphy – all of whom represented their schools at the half-time interval in Croke Park on Sunday last against Kildare.

Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann

The Downs GAA Club were in superb form this week in the Rince Fóirne and the Rince Seit in Ballymore on Friday evening last. We had a number of teams qualifying for the Leinster Final in Portlaoise on a date to be confirmed in July. Many thanks to Geraldine Dagg and George for their hard work with the figure dancers and Alice and Brenda Deihy for their hard work with the set dancers. Their time is much appreciated. Best of luck to all in the Leinster Final.
