Defeat in Round 1 of championship

Glenroe 1-16 Hospital/Herbertstown 1-18

Glenroe were defeated by Hospital/Herbertstown in the first round of the County Championship in Knocklong on Friday evening last. Very few of the Glenroe players played up to form on this occasion and the absence of Mike O’Brien, due to two broken fingers, proved to be the telling factors in this contest.

Hospital scored their opening goal within 30 seconds of the start and they added a point from a 25m free one minute later. Glenroe’s first score, a point, came from a 45m free by Eoin Walsh in the 2nd min. Hospital pointed from a 25m free in the 5th min. but this was quickly neutralised by a Declan O’Connor point. Eoin Walsh added a point from a 45m free one minute later. Hospital extended their lead to 3 pts. once again with a point in the 8th min. Points by Stephen Walsh (70m free) and D.J.Sheehy reduced the lead to one point by the 12th min. Both teams pointed in the 13th min before Hospital extended their lead back to two points two minutes later. Wayward shooting by both sides over the following 7 mins was followed by Hospital/Herberstown dominating between the 23rd to the 29th min. They scored a further three points and hit two wides during this period. Eoin Walsh pointed from a 30m free in the final minute of the first half to leave four points between the sides, Hospital 1-8; Glenroe 0-7.

Eoin Walsh narrowed the margin by scoring a point from a 25m free 30 seconds into the second half. Hospital responded with a point from a 45m free two minutes later. Both sides conceded frees in their backline resulting in one point each. John Quane pointed from play but Hospital responded quickly with a point. Further indiscretions by both sets of backs resulted in the conceding of a point on either end. Hospital extended their lead to five points by the 52nd min. and appeared to be in a commanding position at this stage. However, a point by D.J.Sheehy, a goal by substitute, Donal Coffey and a point by Mike Mansell had Glenroe back on level terms for the first time since the start of the game with five minutes remaining. Hospital pointed from play before Eoin Walsh responded with a point from a 45m free. Hospital edged ahead once again by pointing twice, one from a 60m free and the other from play. Eoin Walsh narrowed the margin to one point with a point from a 50m free one minute from full time. However, Hospital quickly scored two points as play entered injury time. Glenroe were awarded a penalty in the dying moments of the game but Stephen Walsh struck it too high, resulting in a point. Hospital deservedly won by two points in the end.

Team & Scorers

K Hickey, S Fox, J Murphy, P Coffey, JB Murphy, D McCarthy, M Kelly, S Walsh (0-2 frees), T Crawford, D Kelly, DJ Sheehy (0-2), E Walsh (0-8 frees), J Quane (0-1), D O’Connor (0-1), M Mansell (0-2).

This display by Glenroe was one of their worst so far this year. Their first touch on the ball was dreadful. They conceded far too many frees and relied heavily on scores from frees by Eoin Walsh to keep them in the game. Their next game is against Caherline, who defeated them at the County Semi-Final stage in 2008 and a win in this game is essential if Glenroe have any prospect of being involved in the knock out stages of the championship.
