  Tinryland GFC club notes 28th June 2026

The 2nd weekend of the South East sevens tournament attracted 26 club teams from 8 counties to Rathcrogue on Saturday and Sunday last.

In the girls U15 tournament for the Tommy O’Neill trophies on Saturday, victory in the cup final went to Kilcullen from Kildare who had a 3-point win over Rathvilly in the final. In the shield final Laois club St. Brigids had a 3-point victory over Kildavin/Clonegal in the final. Shane O’Neill son of the late Tommy O’Neill presented the winning captains Caoimhe Earley and Molly O’Reilly with the respective Tommy O’Neill cup and shield. The secondary tournaments for the plate and plaque were won by Ballymun Kickhams and Baltinglass respectively

On Sunday last 16 U15 boys club teams from Carlow, Dublin, Laois, Waterford, Wicklow and Wexford competed for the Peenie and Mick Whelan trophies held in memory of two Tinryland football legends. This event was blessed with good weather from start to finish and resulted in a cup win for Kildare club Monasterevin who defeated Wicklow club Tomnafinnoge in a great final on a scoreline of 5-5 to 5-3. The Whelan family presented the Peenie and Mick Whelan cup to joint captains Paddy Mahon and Cormac Morrissey with Monasterevins Derry Whelan winning the man of the match award. In the shield final Graiguecullen had a comfortable win against Dublin club Stars of Erin. Graiguecullen captain Podge Brennan received the shield from the Whelan family with the winning captain also winning the player of the match award.

There was a Laois victory in the plate final when Ballylinan defeated Ballymun Kickhams in a very close encounter by 7-2 to 6-6. The plaque final was won by the host club Tinryland who defeated Clonmore with team captain James Kehoe receiving Peenie and Mick Whelan plaque.

The tournament which has attracted over 90 clubs will conclude on Saturday and Sunday next with the Cora Townsend and Ned Hayden cups for U13 girls and boys.

Well done to local sprinter Eanna Dunican who won the National U19 100m title in Tullamore on Saturday last in a brilliant time of 10.6 seconds. He joins other local sprinters Marcus Lawler and Adam Murphy who are very prominent at national level at present.

The club lotto jackpot still stands at €10,000 and can be played online via the clubforce app or by purchasing a ticket for the Monday evening draw from any committee member. Lucky dip winners in last Mondays draw were Tom and Patricia Lawler, Kara Dunne, Clare Kelly, and John McCullough.
