Tel labs Carlow Senior Ladies Football championship
Bennekerry/Tinryland 2-6 Eire Og 1-4
Bennekerry/Tinryland senior ladies the current Leinster and All Ireland Intermediate champions were given a stern test of their credentials against a determined Eire Og in Pairc Ui Bhrian in the final league round of the Carlow S.F.C. on Wednesday last. Two early points from Cliodhna Ni Se and the returning Roisin Byrne should have settled the current title holders, but Eire Og were enjoying the lion’s share of the possession in those early stages and despite a fortuitous goal from Ni Se it was Eire Og that led at half time with a Sarah Timmons goal that evaded Shannen Cotter in the BT goal together with two Beth Evesson points and another from Aoife Hayden. BT were dealt a blow 5 minutes before half time when one of their players was sent to the sin bin by referee Brian Deering. Half time score Eire Og 1-3 Bennekerry/Tinryland 1-2.
After 7 minutes of scoreless play BT captain Ruth Bermingham levelled matters but just as it looked like the ladies from Rathcrogue would drive on back came Eire Og to level matters once again via Beth Evesson with 20 minutes remaining. Both sides then began to spring players from the bench with Eire Og sending on Emily Wall and Georgia Fitzgerald and BT introducing Grace Lawler. BT edged ahead once again with one of the best scores of the game from Sinead Hayden, but Eire Og were still on parity entering the final quarter with Edel Hayden and Sarah Reilly holding their own at mid-field. It was then that BT finally woke up from their slumbers with Roisin Byrne edging her team ahead with a point in the 49th minute and the same player rolling back the years with a brilliantly executed goal 5 minutes before the final whistle. The final say in this game went to the champions with a well taken Cliodhna Ni Se point but in truth this performance by BT will need a lot of improvement if they are to retain their Carlow title against Old Leighlin in 3 weeks’ time.
