Clonmore defeat wasteful Tinryland in JFC (B)

Talbot Hotel JFC (B)

                         Clonmore 1-9                                                            Tinryland 0-8

Tinryland’ s 2nd 15 succeeded in losing a game they most certainly should have won against Clonmore in round 2 of the JFC B in Hacketstown on Saturday evening.

Everything that could have gone wrong happened to Tinryland with one player getting injured in the warmup and another hobbling off as early as the 7th minute. This combined with poor finishing and decision making kept the home side in the game after Tinryland gained an early lead through opening points from Conall McGuire and Sean Murphy within 5 minutes of the throw in. Glen Doyle who replaced the injured Eoin Townsend in the 7th minute quickly got on the scoreboard with a point but in truth a gilt-edged goal chance was on in this movement.

Taking heart from this let off Clonmore opened their account in the 11th minute with a point from Owen Coleman which was matched by a Luke Broderick conversion from a free won by Glen Doyle. Within seconds Clonmore responded with another Owen Coleman point from a free. The only goal in the game then arrived when that man Coleman crashed the ball past Lee Buggle to put his side ahead for the first time. Clonmore were slowly gaining the upper hand at this stage mainly due to more errors from the Tinryland men and they went further clear with a Darragh Cullen point in the 22nd minute and another conversion from Owen Coleman for a free brough up to the 20-metre line for a new rule infringement. Tinryland continued to squander goal chances and both teams retired at half time with Clonmore leading by 1-4 to 0-4.

The 2nd half was 3 minutes old when Clonmore centre back William Byrne extended his teams advantage with a point quickly matched with a Tomas Murphy conversion from a free won by Glen Doyle. More Glen Doyle magic after good play by Shay McCullough left only 2 points separating the teams by the 37th minute as Clonmore introduced Oran Keating off the subs bench. Tinryland continued to squander goal chances at this stage with Conall McGuire missing a gilt-edged chance in the 40th minute. Tinryland introduced fresh legs in Paddy Walshe at this stage, but it was the men from the Wicklow border that went further clear with a point from attacking centre back William Byrne. Tinryland were then handed an advantage when Clonmore full back Tom Cashin received a black card for a foul on Glen Doyle with Luke Broderick converting the resulting free. Most in attendance felt Tinryland had a real chance now with numerical advantage but it was Clonmore that responded more positively scoring a point from Evan Fitzachary and a brilliant two pointer from long serving John McGrath to put the result beyond doubt entering stoppage time. Tinryland closed the scoring with another Glen Doyle point but it was too little too late and the men in blue and white will now play Eire Og in round 3 next week.

Outstanding for the winners were Paddy Byrne, Owen Coleman, Tom Cashen, William Byrne, John McGrath and Darragh Cullen.
