Tinryland club notes 7th January 2024

The new year got off to the best possible start on Saturday last at Netwatch Cullen park when the Tinryland U20 team captured the Stryve U20 (B) title in dramatic fashion with a winner in the 7th minute of stoppage time. Tinryland never headed their Ballon opponents at any stage until the dying stages in an epic final and were behind by 3 points when the half time whistle sounded. Ballon weathered a mini Tinryland revival early in the 2nd half and looked to be on their way to the title when leading by 3 points as the clock edged into 8 minutes of stoppage time. In the 61st minute Tinryland were thrown a lifeline when Conor Carew crashed the ball past Ballon goalie Cian Byrne and another 6 minutes of scoreless play ensued before Bobby Doyle curled over the winner for Tinryland. After another 60 seconds of defensive play Tinryland survived numerous Ballon attacks and joint captains Mark Mullen and Michael Hosey lifted the cup to the delight of the Tinryland supporters in the large crowd that included new Tinryland senior manager John Nolan.

Outstanding for the men in blue and white were the McGuire brothers Conaill and Cian, together with Michael Hosey, Mark Mullen, Luke Broderick, Conor Carew, Kyle Holden until injured and match winner Bobby Doyle

A good weekend for Tinryland sport got even better on Sunday last when the Tinryland A.C. mens team captured the Carlow senior cross country team title for the Odlum Cup. It was the first win for Tinryland in this event since 2016 as they finished 8 points clear of the holders St. Laurence O’Toole A.C. Outstanding runs from Mick Kelly, 3rd, Padraig Webb 4th Tom Nolan 5th together with Colin Payne, Tommy Payne and Pat Burke contributed to the Tinryland success.
