Stryve U20 Championship

     Naomh Eoin 2-9            Tinryland 3-5

A last-minute point deep in stoppage time denied Tinryland a share of the spoils in this opening game of the Stryve U20 championship at Rathcrogue on Friday last 14th October. This was a game the home team could have won but with only a panel of 16 available and losing a player in the early stages were pipped at the end by a fit and fast Myshall outfit.

Tinryland opened the scoring in the 1st minute with a Cillian Fagan point before Naomh Eoin responded with a pair of points from Michael Nolan and Dean Slye. Tinryland’s response was swift, and their most impressive player Eoin Townsend rattle the Myshall net after 8 minutes to put the home team ahead. Scott Treacy for Myshall and Luke Broderick for Tinryland traded points before Tinryland goalkeeper Daniel Donegan was forced to make a great save to deny Naomh Eoin a goal. Mid way through the opening half the minimum separated the teams after a Jamie Behan point for the men from the edge of Mount Leinster and it got even better for the away team when Max Foley found the Tinryland net in the 19th minute after a great 5-man movement. Tinryland’s response was swift and up popped Eoin Townsend again to rattle the Myshall net after great play from Vivian Nixon and Cillian Fagan. Fortunes changed again in the 25th minute when Myshall pressure forced a penalty which was despatched to the net by Scott Treacy. The same player popped over a point 3 minutes before the break before Cillian Fagan closed the 1st half scoring with a point for the home side to leave the scoreboard reading 2-5 to 2-3 for the eventual winners at the break.

The 2nd half began with another Myshall point from a free by Dean Slye which was responded to by a successful conversion from Cillian Fagan. The home fans were then happy when Eoin Townsend completed his hat trick with another goal out of the top drawer and when the same player raised a white flag moments later Tinryland led by 2 with 18 minutes left. Alas this was to be the final score for the home team as Naomh Eoin threw the kitchen sink in an attempt to salvage the game. Their efforts were rewarded with a Scott Treacy point with 8 minutes remaining and the teams were all square with 7 minutes left when Colm Beck slotted over a point. The remaining minutes were played in a welter of excitement with both teams seeking a winner. Tinryland had at least 3 chances to get the winner, but it was Naomh Eoin that got that stoppage time winner from Michael Nolan who received a pass from Scott Treacy. Outstanding for Tinryland were Cian McGuire, Vivian Nixon, Michael Hosey, Cian Nicholl, Luke Broderick and man of the match Eoin Townsend who finished with a personal tally of 3-1.

Tinryland: Daniel Donegan, Adam Fennelly, Cian McGuire, Vivian Nixon, Michael Hosey, Cormac McElligott, Darragh Brennan, Cian Nicholl, Luke Broderick 0-1, Paddy Regan, Terry Cassidy, Mark Mullen, Daryl Nolan, Cillian Fagan 0-3, Eoin Townsend 3-1. Sub: Aongus O’Shea
