Match report: Fenagh v Tinryland

S.F.L. Div. 2

      Fenagh 7-8                      Tinryland 1-7

A Faster fitter and more agile Fenagh under the management of former Tinryland coach and player Paul Kenny proved far too strong for a disappointing Tinryland in the final league game in the S.F.L. division 2 at J J Hogan Park on Sunday last. The old adage that goals win matches was never as true as in this game as the home side put seven past the men in blue and white with 4 green flags being raised in the opening half. Fenagh were quick out of the blocks scoring 2 majors in the opening 7 minutes from their lively centre forward Colin Byrne. Together with full forward Jack Treacy both players proved a torment to the Tinryland defence throughout and they accounted for 5 goals and 4 points of the winners total.

Tinryland never really got going in this match but they chipped away at the scoreboard in the opening half with centre forward Padraic Whelan accounting for all of their 5 first half points. Half Time score Fenagh 4-4. Tinryland 0-5.

When referee David Brady re-started proceedings Fenagh kept their foot on the pedal scoring further points from Colin Byrne and mid-fielder mark Foley. Tinryland responded with an Alan barrett point which was cancelled out by another white flag from Fenagh via Michael Murphy. Tinryland finally broke through the home defence when Conor Brennan finished a fine move with Padraic Whelan scoring another point for the away team. These were only consolation scores however and the fitter home team pulled further clear with further goals from Sean Smithers, Mark Foley and Colin Byrne who finished the game with a personal tally of 4-2.

This result was certainly food for thought for Tinryland’s 2nd fifteen who will contest the 2020 Junior (A) final on 31st July.
