Village Barn Ladies Senior Championship:

With build up for the upcoming Ladies Senior Championship. This is how the girls got on in the last match

St Lomans Mullingar 3-08 Milltown 1-12, 28/08/2025

The phrase “sign of champions” can be often be attributed to how a team responds to a setback. After a defeat a fortnight ago in Rochfortbridge, it would have been very easy for our senior ladies side to go through the motions in their final group game, at the home of the favourites for the Lyster cup. Thankfully, a young Lomans team, short four of last year’s starting team were victorious in Rathconrath last Thursday.

On a rainy night, signifying the end of summer conditions were difficult. Caoimhe Kilmurray got the first score of the game. The hosts then took control with the aid of the wind, scoring five points unanswered with almost everything going through Sarah Dillon. Ciaran Kilmurray’s side responded well with four consecutive points of their own, courtesy of Ciara Blundell, Lucy McCartan and a Katie Kilmurray brace. Milltown once again rallied and hit back with four points in a row to give last year’s runners up a four point lead at the interval. The saints perhaps should have closer at half time having missed a couple of big goal opportunities.

The superb Sarah Dillon opened the second half scoring with an outrageous point to make it double scores. Then came the first goal of the game, Evie Kilmurray finding her cousin Katie who drilled a low, right-footed shot into the bottom corner to ignite a comeback. Thoughts of resurgence were briefly halted when Dillon’s long-range effort dropped into the net to bring the gap back to five points.  Once again though the blues continued to defy the script writers and three points on the spin via Katie and Evie Kilmurray, as well as Vicky Carr’s fisted score left the deficit at just two points.

Leanne Slevin and Sarah Dillon, the two Milltown stalwarts pointed to doubled their side’s advantage. With just five minutes left to play, a brilliant team move saw Katie Kilmurray presented with another goal chance, this time Kilmurray hit a stunning left foot rocket into the top corner to leave the minimum between the sides. From the resultant kick out, Evie Kilmurray managed to intercept a misplaced kick. She could have been forgiven for settling for her point but the sixteen year old lifted the ball over Karen Walshe into the Milltown net to give the away side a slender advantage.

Milltown searched for a late goal to regain their lead but the county champion’s game management was superb and they managed to keep possession of the ball for the majority of the closing stages. Referee Paul O’Malley blew the full time whistle and St Lomans became the first Westmeath side to win a championship match in Milltown, for over four years. A wonderful team effort was necessary to overcome such a formidable side in Milltown. The saints now await the final group game, where their fate will either be waiting in a semi-final , or a quarter final against Killucan.

Although Sarah Dillon managed to score 1-08 for her side, it must be said Lara McCartan did very well to limit her impact. Many of the scores Dillon kicked were truly unstoppable and the two had a great battle for the full sixty minutes. She was ably aided in defence by Shannon Breslin, Sandra McGrath and Eimear Doonan.  The dynamic duo in midfield of Caoimhe Kilmurry and Vicky Carr were brilliant. Lucy McCartan shone in her playmaker role. Evie Kilmurray had an excellent game and came away with the winning goal for her efforts. Ultimately though Katie Kilmurray was the match winner and her two goals were ultimately the winning of the match. Special mention must also go to Eleanor Corcoran who came on for her senior debut and looked a natural at this level.

Team; Jane McKenna, Lara McCartan, Ella Daly, Eimear Doonan, Shauna Traynor, Shannon Breslin, Ellen Kilmuarry, Vicky Carr (0.01), Caoimhe Kilmurray (0.01), Annie Kilmurray, Lucy McCartan (0.01), Ciara Blundell (0.01), Sandra McGrath, Evie Kilmurray (1.01), Katie Kilmurray (2.03, 0.02f). Underage Football Fun Day

Our final training session of the year will take place on September 26th. To round things off, we’ll be holding a Fun Day on October 4th, packed with games, activities, and plenty of laughter!

We’d love to see as many parents as possible getting involved on the day – be ready to join in the fun and even take on the kids in some friendly competitions. It promises to be a brilliant way to finish out the season, and we can’t wait to see you all there!

Underage Girls Football

U14 girls

Congratulations to our U14 Division 5 girls, who have qualified for the county final with a great win at home against Goldsmith Girls on Thursday night. Well done to everyone involved. We expect this final to be played on the weekend of September 20/21. Well done to all. The Division 5 panel is: Leah Garrigan, Faye Harte, Isabelle Ward, Lily Watters, Emily Graham, Sorcha Gunning, Saoirse Brady, Georgia Tully, Beibhinn Scally, Sophie Dinu, Ella Rose Brennan, Grace Farry, Amber O'Loughlin, Aisling McCormack, Zoe Fitzpatrick, Lucy Flynn, Kiayah Walsh, Connie Ní Bhraonáin, Eve Nugent, Ebba Greene, Caoimhe Whitney, Zoe Gilgan, Veronica Heraty.

Unfortunately, our Division 1 team lost out to the same opponents in their semi-final in Tubberclair on Thursday. It was a disappointing night for the girls, but they have given everything on the field all year and are a credit to the club. Hard luck girls.

U8/U10 girls

St Loman's hosted Milltown, Bunbrosna, Caulry and The Downs for a very enjoyable U8/U10 girls blitz in Dovida Lakepoint Park on Saturday morning. Thanks to all players and coaches involved on a day when all teams gave a great account of themselves despite some breezy and wet conditions. Thanks to all who contributed and distributed goodies after the football, and of course our club referees.

Thanks also to Mullingar Shamrocks for hosting our teams on Sunday morning for their U6 blitz in Springfield. Thankfully the rain held off and a great morning's football was had by all.

Ted Cronin

Some of the girls from our underage teams recently paid a visit to our chief Ted, who is currently taking a short break from the sideline on doctor’s advice. Even while away from pitchside, Ted continues to play a vital role behind the scenes – ensuring fixtures are organised, jerseys are ready, kit is in place, and coaches are supported.

The club wishes to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude for his outstanding commitment and tireless dedication. Ted’s efforts, often unseen, are what keep everything running smoothly for players, parents, and coaches alike. His contribution is deeply valued across all levels of the club.

All at St Loman’s look forward to welcoming Ted back very soon, and we thank him for everything he continues to do for our teams.
