Junior 1 Championship St Loman’s Mullingar 0-13 — 1-11 Mullingar Shamrocks
St Loman’s Mullingar delivered a committed and patient display on Friday night but were narrowly beaten 1-11 to 0-13 by town rivals Mullingar Shamrocks in a well-contested Junior Football Championship encounter.
An early setback came when the visitors struck for the game’s only goal, but St Loman’s Mullingar quickly settled. Playing into a slight breeze in the opening half, they enjoyed long spells of control, with patient build-up play rewarded by fine scores from defenders Tom Dorr and the ever-reliable Senan Russell. Riley Sheahan’s sharp defensive work which further up the pitch earned frees converted by McCann, and the home side’s disciplined shape forced the opposition into speculative long-range efforts. At the heart of the defence, Ciaran Smith was outstanding, showing excellent fielding ability and a relentless work rate that repeatedly broke up opposition attacks.
St Loman’s Mullingar began the second half strongly, building on their momentum to move four points clear thanks to Senan Russell’s superb score and a clever effort from Kenny that bounced in off the post. At that stage, the home side looked well set to push on for victory.
However, despite the effort and organisation shown throughout, St Loman’s Mullingar were unable to hold out in the closing stages as the visitors mounted a late surge, hitting the final four points to overturn the lead. The match finished with St Loman’s Mullingar pushing hard for an equaliser, but time ran out before they could find the score to level matters.
While the result was disappointing, the performance showed plenty of positives, with strong defensive structure, patient attacking play, and moments of quality that will provide a solid platform for the next outing.

Senior Championship St Loman’s Mullingar 1-17 — 0-11 Coralstown/Kinnegad
St Loman’s Mullingar produced a commanding second-half display to record a 1-17 to 0-11 win over Coralstown/Kinnegad in the latest round of the championship. On a night when patience, accuracy, and sheer work rate paid off, John Heslin’s mix of scoring brilliance and dominance in the middle third earned him the Man of the Match award. There were also impressive showings from Shane Dempsey, Jack Geoghegan and Kevin Regan, with all of them making key contributions at vital stages.
The opening half saw Kinnegad enjoy the advantage of a strong breeze and they made the first impression on the scoreboard with an early point. Jack Geoghegan quickly responded with a fine score for St Loman’s Mullingar, but a two-point free kick restored the visitors’ lead. Dempsey then showcased his sharp shooting with a brilliant strike off his left before adding another moments later, this time finishing off an inch-perfect pass from Eoghan Hogan.
Kinnegad looked dangerous in possession and used the wind to keep the scoreboard ticking, but several missed chances kept the game within reach for St Loman’s Mullingar. Despite the breeze against them, the home side defended with discipline, keeping Kinnegad to 0-7 by the break while adding another point to leave it 0-7 to 0-4 at half-time.
The second half was where St Loman’s Mullingar really came to life. Kevin Regan got the crowd going with the first point after the restart before Heslin took centre stage. His fielding in the middle of the park was immense, repeatedly soaring above opponents to claim kick-outs and set attacks in motion. He landed two superb “two-pointers” off his left foot in quick succession, turning the scoreboard and shifting momentum firmly in St Loman’s Mullingar favour.
Jack Geoghegan then added a fine effort that was tipped over by the goalkeeper, and moments later Dempsey struck a beautiful “two-pointer” off his right foot to stretch the lead further. The bench also played its part, Fionn O’Hara entered the fray and immediately made an impact, delivering a pinpoint long ball to Dempsey who set up Regan for another score.
The game’s decisive moment came shortly after when Fionn O’Hara passed the ball into the danger zone for Regan, who calmly slotted home the only goal of the game. From there, St Loman’s Mullingar were in full control. Daly produced a brilliant save late on to preserve the clean sheet before Heslin fittingly rounded off the scoring with his third “two-pointer”, this time off his right foot, to seal an emphatic win.
Heslin finished with seven points, three from beyond the 2 point arc, while Geoghegan’s influence, Dempsey’s sharp finishing, along with Kevin Regan’s crucial scores throughout the game played a huge role in the result. It was an all-round team performance, but the impact of those four players stood out in a strong St Loman’s Mullingar display.
Team: Jason Daly, Nathan Lally, Darragh O’Keeffe, Seanai Bracken, Jack Geoghan (0:02), Eoghan Hogan, Oisin Hogan, Sean Flanagan, Cillian Plunkett (0:01), Eoghan O’Keeffe, Kevin Regan (1:02), Kelvin Reilly, Conor Regan, John Heslin (0:07), Shane Dempsey (0:05) Subs used: Fionn O'Hara, Conan O'Hara, David Whelan, Neil Duffy
Ladies Football – History Makers
St Loman’s Ladies marked another milestone in the club’s history this week, fielding two teams in the Westmeath LGFA Championship for the first time. In the opening round of the Junior Championship, we faced Kilbeggan Shamrocks in a hard-fought encounter. While the result didn’t go our way, the players can be proud of their performance.
A special mention goes to Niamh McGinley, who made her return to action following an ACL injury last year. Niamh’s hard work and determination paid off as she marked her comeback in style, scoring a point with her first touch of the ball.
