Senior Ladies round 1: St Loman’s Mullingar 3:12 The Downs 1:12
St Loman’s, Mullingar kicked off the defence of their Westmeath ladies’ SFC title with a merited win over The Downs at Dovida Lakepoint Park last Thursday evening.
Fielding three debutants, the Blues attacked from the outset, with Lucy McCartan netting inside the first ten seconds. McCartan raised another green flag before the quarter-hour mark and with Ciara Blundell and Katie Kilmurray also finding their range, Loman’s led last year’s defeated finalists 2-9 to 0-4 at the short whistle.
The Downs looked for a way back after the restart and had the best of the first ten minutes before Ciara Blundell tucked away a third Loman’s goal to kill off the game as a contest. Blundell finished from close range after a wonderful passing move involving McCartan and Vicky Carr.
The Downs had a late goal thanks to Francesca Walshe but the Blues ran out comfortable 3-12 to 1-12 winners. Congratulations to our debutants Evie Kilmurray, Eimear Doonan and Maddie Mulderry on their maiden outing at senior grade.
