St Lomans Mullingar Club Notes 09/06/2025:
ACFL Division 2:
St Lomans Mullingar 1-10 Mullingar Shamrocks 2-15
St Lomans Mullingar’s second side went into a local derby in Springfield last Saturday knowing they had something of a free shot against our neighbours. Having secured safety the previous week, Adam Carroll’s side had no fear of relegation in their minds going into the final round. Shamrocks on the other hand knew that they needed a result in order to survive, at the expense of St Mary’s Rochfortbridge.
The blues had the benefit of the breeze in the first half but it was the home side that started the brighter and were awarded a penalty, thankfully for the visitors Rory Matthews managed to foil Ryan Kelly from the spot with an excellent save. The sides traded points early on with Shane Mulderry and Paddy Dowdall on target for Lomans, before Oisín Hogan put his side in front with an excellent two pointer. Conan O’Hara then doubled the lead from a placed ball.
In truth, though Lomans were relatively lucky to be in front after being saved by Rory Matthews on several occasions. The hosts responded with a quick-fire 1-03 in the space of five minutes to put them in the driving seat coming up to half time. The saints managed to stay in touch via a Mark Tunney score and a two point-free from Peter Foy, to leave a one point deficit at the break.
Shamrocks began the second half well again and two frees from Trevor Keena gave them a three point cushion. Mark Tunney responded with a free to double his tally and reduce the arrears. The moment of the match came with twenty minutes to go from a Lomans perspective. Super work from Conan O’Hara, Tristan Graham and Seanai Bracken managed to break through the shamrocks defence, with the latter finding the net. You could have been forgiven for thinking the Blues were going to steal the points and relegate their rivals going into the last quarter.
However, this provoked an emphatic response from the green side of Mullingar who struck 1-07 without reply including a second penalty which they were awarded. Peter Foy got a late consolation for the blues but ultimately Mullingar Shamrocks were full value for their win. As is the case so often with these games, the team that needs the victory usually gets it. The Lomans players will be the first to admit they underperformed on the day but ultimately they achieved their goal of staying in the division for the year.
In terms of individual performances Oisín Hogan, Mark Tunney, Seanie Dinnegan and Paddy Dowdall performed well. Ultimately though, it was Rory Matthews in goals, who was the stand out performer in the Lomans side. Not only did he save a penalty but made several other excellent saves, avoiding a more embarrassing score line. Finally exposure to division 1 and 2 football should stand our Junior side in good stead going forward.
