St Lomans Mullingar Club Notes 02/06/2025:

Club notes 02/06/2025

 ACFL DIV 1 St. Loman’s Mullingar 2-17, Caulry 0-05 28/05/2025

St. Loman’s Mullingar produced an emphatic performance under the lights at Lakepoint Park, easing past Caulry with a commanding 2-17 to 0-05 victory in Round 9 of the ACFL Division 1 campaign. The result not only reflects the growing cohesion within the squad but also the high standards being maintained as the league nears its conclusion.

The tone was set from the outset. Shane Dempsey, continuing his excellent form, opened the scoring with two well-taken points that immediately put Caulry on the back foot. Caulry responded by launching a high ball into the square, but goalkeeper Rory Matthews reacted sharply, rising confidently to claim it and shut down the threat. That early moment of composure at the back seemed to settle the Loman’s defence, who grew stronger as the game progressed.

Shortly after, David Whelan combined smartly with Dempsey to split the Caulry defence once again, showing the kind of quick interplay and off-the-shoulder running that became a feature of the Loman’s attack. The breakthrough came moments later when Peter Foy launched a beautifully struck long-range free that dropped into the hands of Dempsey, who offloaded to Conor Regan for a cool finish into the net.

As the half wore on, the hosts continued to dominate possession and tempo. Regan tagged on a point of his own, and Dempsey added another two-point score, using clever movement to create space in the left channel. Caulry’s frustrations grew, and a red card midway through the half left them down to 14 men. St. Loman’s capitalised immediately, as Matthews’ quick kick-out initiated a sweeping move that ended with Mark Tunney feeding Eoghan O’Keefe for a tidy point to close out the half.

Half-Time Score:

Second Half:

While the second half opened with both sides trading early scores, St. Loman’s soon took full control once again. A standout moment arrived through one of the most impressive team scores of the night: a short kick-out from Matthews to Foy, who delivered a precise ball into Conan O’Hara. O’Hara offloaded quickly to Dempsey, who spun away from his marker and clipped over an elegant point, stretching the gap further.

O’Hara then got in on the scoring himself with a cleanly taken point, underlining his growing influence on the game. With Kelvin Reilly and Tristan Graham introduced shortly after, Loman’s injected fresh energy without losing rhythm.

The final stages saw Loman’s in total control. A composed build-up involving multiple players ended with Tunney curling over a fine score. Minutes later, another flowing attack, passing sharply through the lines, resulted in Conor Regan finishing his second goal of the game, capping off a clinical evening for the centre forward.

Further substitutions followed, with Sean Flanagan, Tom Dorr, and Danno Fitzsimons coming on to close out the match. The fresh legs maintained the tempo, and the hosts dominated the final quarter, outscoring Caulry by 1-06 to 0-01 in a period that showcased their depth and fitness.

This was a standout team display from start to finish. Defensively solid, composed in transition, and ruthless going forward, St. Loman’s dictated the pace and style of the game throughout. The performance was a testament to the depth in the squad, with all substitutes making positive contributions and every line of the pitch functioning well. St Lomans had a number of excellent performances with Shane Dempsey and Conor Regan have been a part of some beautiful attacking play. Darragh O’Keefe and Ethan Brown in particular had a stellar defensive game.

As the league nears its conclusion, this win will be a real boost and another step forward in building consistency and confidence ahead of the championship. With the final league game coming up St Lomans would love to continue this momentum.
