St Lomans Mullingar Club Notes 06/05/2024:

ACFL Division 1:

St Lomans Mullingar 2-12 Tang 2-04

Our senior men continued their winning ways last Friday night when they welcomed Tang to Lakepoint Park. The visitors came with a plan to be direct, and it gave them joy in the early moments, as they opened the scoring in the second minute with a goal after a long ball in. The blues responded well and missed two big goal chances, but it was to be third time lucky as TJ Cox raced through on goal and finished emphatically to level proceedings. Peter Foy and Adam Neary traded scores for their sides before the home side took control. Three consecutive points, via Jack Geoghegan and a TJ Cox double gave the saints breathing space before a somewhat fortuitous TJ Cox strike found the top corner to give the hosts breathing space. Neary replied for Tang, but it was cancelled out courtesy of an excellent team score, finished off by Sean Flanagan. The Mullingar side lead by six points at the interval.

The third quarter was a tight affair with two scores for each side, Eoghan O’Keefe and TJ Cox registering the scores for Lomans. Five unanswered points from the county champions put the game beyond doubt, Rory Sheahan and Sean Flanagan pointing either side of three super TJ Cox points. The game finished as it started with Tang finding the Lomans net, a powerful free kick hammered into the roof of the net caught the blues’ defence out. In the end Paddy Dowdall’s side ran out relatively comfortable eight-point winners and are still in with a chance of making a league final with just three matches to be played. It was also great to see young players such as Daniel McCann, Ethan Browne, Shane Mulderry and Cillian Plunkett make an appearance, with the latter pair making their debut.

On the night Paddy Dowdall and his management team will be happy with the performance, particularly with the absence of a number of key players. Jack Geoghegan slotted in very well at centre-half back, Conor O’Donoghue also performed well in the half-back line. Sean Flanagan worked tirelessly in the middle of the park, as did Rory Sheahan and Eoghan O’Keefe in the forwards. Man of the match however had to be TJ Cox who managed to outscore the opposition with a final tally of 2-06. Cox’s scoring contribution was vital on the night especially with absence of many of our top marksmen. Rory Matthews was once again excellent in between the sticks for his team, making several point-blank saves. Adam Neary was excellent for the away side also scoring 1-03 of his side’s tally.

ACFL Division 4:

St Lomans Mullingar 4-07 Garrycastle 1-09

Our third team recorded a crucial victory last Tuesday night against Garrycastle’s second side. The first half was an even contest with both sides registering early scores with Daniel McCann and Ger Heneghan on target for their respective sides. The home side raced into a commanding lead with two superb goals courtesy of Fola Ayorinde and Tristan Graham. The visitors reponded well though with five points on the spin to leave the minimum between the sides at the interval.

The Blues took over in the third quarter after hitting 2-04 without reply. Fola Ayorinde got his second goal of the night after a powerful run and a beautiful dummy to round the goalkeeper. Further scores from Ayorinde, Graham, Shane Mulderry and corner-back Tristan Johnson extended the gap. Rory Sheahan got the saints fourth of the night when he fired home from close range to end the contest well and truly. The Shannon siders reduced the scoreline with a goal and three points but points from Daniel McCann and an excellent Ethan Browne point saw the home side run out seven-point winners.

The victory was well-needed for Lomans who will need one final victory from their last two matches to be assured of survival. On the night it was the division one experience of the likes of Fola Ayorinde, Tristan Graham, Eoghan O’Keefe and Rory Sheahan which proved crucial in the victory. On the night the bulk of the scoring came from Fola Ayorinde which cemented his position as man of the match. The likes of Ethan Browne, Tristan Johnson, Nedas Bielicas and Shane Boyce also impressed.

Team; Rory Matthews, Jack Tyrrell, Ciaran Smyth, Tristan Johnson (0.01), Ethan Browne (0.01), Rory Sheahan (1.00), Senan Russell, Eoghan O’Keefe, Nedas Bielicas, Shane Mulderry (0.01), Shane Boyce, Eoghan Kenny, Daniel McCann (0.02,0.01f), Tristan Graham (1.01, 0.01f), Fola Ayorinde (2.01).
