St Lomans GAA Club Notes 05/06/2023:

ACFL Division 4:

St Lomans Mullingar 5-13 The Downs 0-08

Our division 4 side travelled to the Downs last Tuesday evening in the knowledge that any sort of result would ensure they survive relegation. Both sides started with two points each, Adam Lynch and Cian Daly got on the scoresheet for the blues, Jack Carroll and Sean Colgan did the damage for the black and amber. The visitors took charge shortly after hitting five unanswered points, with Cian Daly adding to his tally and David Morgan hitting four consecutive points. Carroll responded for the hosts, but it was cancelled out by another score from Daly. The visitors took a firm hold of the game when Adam Lynch finished off a brilliant team move for the first of five Lomans goals. The Downs replied with two scores to reduce the arrears, Daly and Conor Regan were on target to restore the lead. Seanai Bracken netted before the interval to leave the visitors ten points to the good.

David Morgan picked up where he left in the second half hitting 1-02 on the bounce followed up by Seanai Bracken’s point from play. Carroll got the downs off the with a free, but Tristan Graham netted at the other end of the field to increase the gap. The sides traded scores with Colgan on target for the downs and Ciaran Smyth opened his account for the saints. A great night for the blues was capped off by a fantastic fifth goal from substitute Mark O’Gara. In truth Lomans were dominant all around the pitch with the likes of David Morgan, Oisín Hogan, Enda Gaffney excelling. The win secures our division 4 status for another year.

Ladies Division 5 League:

St Lomans Mullingar 1-12 Milltownpass 2-10

Last Monday night on a beautiful sunny evening our division 5 ladies team travelled to Milltownpass. The blues started brightly with a point from Sarah McManus followed by a goal from Jayne Charles. The Hosts then hit a purple patch scoring 2-03 without reply which was ultimately the undoing of Lomans.  A trio of points from Sarah McManus, Phoebe Harte and Paige Matthews reduced the arrears. Milltownpass replied with two points, but McManus had the last word of the half with a score to leave three between the sides.

The Hosts started the second period stronger with a pair of points, but they were cancelled out by scores from McManus and Niamh McGinley. The teams once again exchanged scores with McManus on target from a free. The saints fought hard in the second half and regained the lead with four placed balls which they had to work hard to win, and they were duly converted by Paige Matthews. Unfortunately, Ciaran Kilmurray’s side conceded tow late scores to see the host come away with the two points on offer.

The Mullingar side can count themselves unlucky not to have earned at least a draw on the balance of play but in truth it was the first half which they went on to rue. Nevertheless, there were several positives to take out of the game. Lara McCartan and Keelie Mulderry were super at the back and up-front Paige Matthews and Sarah McManus were very accurate, especially from placed balls. The football will now cease for a month to break for the leaving certificate exams.

Team; Jane McKenna, Lisa Owens, Keelie Mulderry, Eve Scally, Aoibhe Hogan, Aileen Martin, Lara McCartan, Shauna Traynor, Jayne Charles (1.00), Niamh McGinley (0.01), Paige Matthews (0.05,0.04f), Rachel McKenna, Phoebe Harte (0.01), Sarah McManus(0.05, 0.03f). Under 13 Division 1 League Final:

St Lomans Mullingar 1-12 Mullingar Shamrocks 1-08

Last Friday night amid the beautiful weather Mullingar Shamrocks hosted local rivals St Lomans Mullingar in Springfield. Shamrocks started the brighter and raced into a four point lead with a point from Theo Kelly and a goal from Colm Clinton, who rattled the net via the underside of the crossbar. Cathal Kilmurray got the Blues off the mark with a super point, but the four-point lead was restored at the other end following a great score from Darragh Daly.

Kilmurray responded for the saints to add to his tally before Paidi Slevin added another well-taken point to reduce the arrears to two points. The sides traded two scores each in the second quarter, Matthew Tully and Billy Lambden opening their accounts for the visitors, the hosts did their scoring through a pair of frees from Midfielder Scott Farrelly. Farrelly would go on to have the last word of the half with another effort from a placed ball, which left three between the teams at half time.

Despite the summery conditions there was a significant breeze at play and after playing against the conditions in the first period, Lomans had the aid of the wind in the second period. Within five minutes the blues were level with three unanswered points, two from Luke Fitzsimons either side of a Michael Brennan point. The visitors took the lead for the first time in the 40th minute with an excellent point from Billy Lambden. The lead was snuffed out instantly at the other end through a great point from Colm Clinton. The sides continued to trade scores with Kilmurray and Farrelly on target for their respective teams.

The defining moment of the game came in the fourth quarter when Kilmurray found Luke Fitzsimons who buried a low shot into the bottom corner of the net to put the side from Lakepoint into the driving seat. Paidi Slevin momentarily extended the advantage, but Farrelly once again responded with an excellent free to leave it as a one score game heading into the closing stages. Mullingar Shamrocks searched for a goal to level the game, but it was the blues who got the insurance score at the other end through Cillian Raleigh. It turned out to be the final scoreof the match, St Lomans running out four-point winners.

This local derby was played in great spirits with both sides playing a positive brand of football. The two sides put in a huge effort for sixty minutes and it was nip and tuck until the final whistle. The visitors ultimately deserved the victory for a strong second half display but credit to Mullingar Shamrocks who never gave up and fought until the end.

In terms of individual performances Mullingar Shamrocks midfielder Scott Farrelly was excellent, particularly from placed balls, Colm Clinton and Shay Leavy also caught the eye. For the victors, the likes of Paidi Slevin, Sean O’Connell and Shane Canning performed excellently, as well as match winner Luke Fitzsimons. However, man of the match was Cathal Kilmurray, the talisman who kept the Saints in the game for the first half and was instrumental in their victory.
