Shay Murtagh Senior Championship:

St Lomans Mullingar 0-11 The Downs 3-14

Defending Champions St Lomans Mullingar were brought back to earth following a demolition at the hands of The Downs last Wednesday evening in TEG Cusack Park. The Black and Amber raced into an early lead hitting 2-03 in the first 10 minutes, which was ultimately where the damage was done. Goals from Tom Tuite and Niall Mitchell along with points from Andrew Kilmartin and a Luke Loughlin double. The Blues got off the mark through a Shane Dempsey double which were cancelled out by further points from Tuite and Kilmartin. Joe Moran extended the lead for The Downs before a goalmouth scramble saw a third goal for Lar Wall’s men, despite the appeals from the Blues, referee Barry Kelly consulted his umpires who awarded the goal, which seem to go in inadvertently off Jason Daly. The Blues misery continued when Sam McCartan’s penalty hit the post and went across the face of goal, somehow staying out. The sides once again exchanged scores before the break with Dempsey and Danny McCartan on target for the Saints. The Downs went in at the break thirteen points ahead after a catastrophic half for Declan Kelly’s men.

Lomans were much better in the second half in terms of endeavor and spirit, where they more than matched The Downs, outscoring their opponents four points to one in the third quarter. With Shane Dempsey, Ronan O’Toole and the Two McCartan’s getting on the scoresheet. The Downs responded with two Tuite points. The sides exchanged two points each once more with Dempsey and O’Toole adding to their tallies. Danny McCartan got the last point for Lomans but the last word to Man of the Match Luke Loughlin who hit the final point. Loughlin ran the Lomans defence ragged on the night and was head and shoulders above the rest on the night.  The Mullingar men will be furious with their slow start which did the damage on the night. A reaction is needed for their next match against Garrycastle next Saturday evening in TEG Cusack Park.

Team; Jason Daly, Sean Kelly, Darragh O’Keefe, Gerry Grehan, Conor O’Donoghue, Kelvin Reilly, Jack Geoghegan, Sam McCartan (0.02,0.01 Forty-Five), Paul Whelehan, Kevin Regan, Ronan O’Toole (0.02), Danny McCartan (0.03), Peter Foy, Chris Gilbert, Shane Dempsey (0.04, 0.03f). Subs used; Eoghan Hogan, Tristan Graham, Fola Ayorinde, Oisín Hogan, Ryan Jones.

Clarkes Bar Junior Championship:

St Lomans Mullingar 0-15 Athlone 1-15

On the hottest day of the year, our junior side travelled to Athlone looking to get off the mark in the Junior Championship. Unfortunately, the theme of the game was like the previous match with Killucan where the Blues failed to take their chances. The Hosts hit the first three points, but Lomans responded well with four unanswered points through Cian Daly, Eoghan O’Keefe, Conor Cochrane and David Morgan. Former County player, Paul Bannon tied it up for the Hosts with a beautiful free. It was blow for the blow as both sides traded four points each with David Morgan and Conor Regan pointing either side of a double from Conor Cochrane. At the interval both sides went in level pegging at eight points each.

Robbie Kenny’s men started the second half excellently hitting four points on the spin through Conor Regan, substitute Niall McGurran and a double from David Morgan. The Sides then traded points with Hugh Mulhern opening his account for the evening. During this spell, The Mullingar men were wasteful, missing several goal chances which ultimately came back to bite them. Two Points for the hosts saw the lead cut to two pints before a goal from another former Westmeath player John Connellan saw Athlone take the lead. The Sides traded scores with Morgan and substitute Killian Browne getting on the scoresheet. However, the Hosts managed to do enough to get over the line with Joe Fallon getting the final point on the break to seal a three-point win for the south Westmeath side. The Blues are now in need of a win against Mullingar Shamrocks in Springfield this Friday if they are to have any hope of qualification for the knockout stage.

Team; Rory Matthews, Evan Johnson, Senan Russell, Mark O’Gara, Ethan Browne, Eoghan O’Keefe (0.01), Jack Tyrell, Conor Regan (0.02), Darren Kavanagh, Hugh Mulhern (0.01), David Morgan (0.04), Cian Daly (0.01), Ciaran Egerton, Conor Cochrane (0.04, 0.01f), Adam O’Connor. Subs used; Killian Browne (0.01), Niall McGurran (0.01)

Fairgreen Ladies Senior Championship:

St Lomans Mullingar 0-08 Mullingar Shamrocks 1-08

Our Senior Ladies made the short trip to Springfield last week. Scores were at a premium in the first half with only five first half points. The Blues two points came through Vicky Carr and Caoimhe Kilmurray. Karen Hegarty pointed for the hosts along with a double from Chloe Smullen which gave them a slender lead at the interval.

Karen Hegarty netted just after half time which was ultimately the deciding score. The Blues kept plugging away with points from Vicky Carr and Caoimhe Kilmurray either side of Hegarty point. The Sides traded scores the whole half, it was going to take a goal for The Blues who just fell short on the night. Ryan Jones’ team were just lacking another scorer with only Carr and Kilmurray scoring on the night. Despite this it was a very spirited performance from The Saints but ultimately Mullingar Shamrocks forward Karen Hegarty was the difference eon the night.

Team; Fiona Keating, Emma Keena, Muireann Scally, Sandra McGrath, Ellen Kilmurray, Keelie Mulderry, Lara McCartan, Vicky Carr (0.04), Annie Kilmurray, Paige Matthews, Shauna Traynor, Rachel McKenna, Julie McLaughlin, Laura Newman, Caoimhe Kilmurray (0.04). Subs used; Amy Newman, Brigh Robinson, Evie Daly, Phoebe Harte.

Senior B Ladies Championship Result:

St Lomans Mullingar 6-07 St Mary’s Rochfortbridge 8-14

Hard luck to our Senior B side who were defeated after a late flurry of goals from St Mary’s. In truth the score line did not tell the full story as it was nip and tuck for three quarters of the match, but the home side just pulled away at the end.

Team; Saoirse Cunnigham, Amy Newman, Niamh McKenna, Abbie Norris, Eve Scally, Shauna Traynor, Lara McCartan, Rachel McKenna (0.01), Annie Kilmurray, Niamh McGinley (1.00), Caoimhe Kilmurray (3.01), Paige Matthews (0.02f), Sarah McManus (0.02), Laura Newman (2.01). Subs used Jane McKenna, Caitlin Graham, Caoilin Burke, Anna McCartan.
