St Lomans GAA Club Notes 13/09/2021:
Shay Murtagh Senior Championship:
St Lomans Mullingar 2-09 Tyrrellspass 1-07
St Lomans Mullingar got their first win of the 2021 championship under their belt after a hard-fought win against Tyrrellspass on Sunday the 5th September in TEG Cusack Park. The fixture was a repeat of the 2020 final. The Blues got the scoring underway through a Shane Dempsey free and a Ronan O’Toole point from play. The sides then exchanged scores with placed balls from Dempsey and Ger Egan cancelling each other out for their respective teams. TJ Cox opened his account after winning a loose ball in the air and firing over the bar. Cox wasn’t finished there, moments later he found himself bearing down on goal and TJ typically buried the shot into the top right-hand corner of the net to give Lomans control. Tyrellspass pointed before the break from a mark to leave five between the sides at the break.
Tyrellspass started the second half well and scored an early goal which found the net after a ricochet off a Lomans defender. The Sides continued to exchange scores with a Dempsey free and another Cox point cancelling out two Ger Egan scores. When Brian Slevin pointed mid-way through the second half to leave the minimum between the teams, the match was well and truly in the melting pot. However, the Saints pushed on in the latter stages, Kelvin Reilly and Sam McCartan crucially pointed either side of an Egan free to give Declan Kelly’s charges a two-point lead. The crucial score came with two minutes to go when Lomans capitalized on a quick break which concluded with Oisín Hogan sliding in Sean Flanagan who dispatched into the net to cap a fine display from the midfielder. The defending champions ran out five-point winners on the night.
A well needed win for Lomans which will hopefully kick start the campaign. In terms of individual performances Oisín Hogan, Rory Sheahan and David Whelan were excellent. The evergreen Paddy Dowdall was tremendous and showed super-human energy and intensity in his defending as always. Kevin Regan also added some impetus after being introduced from the bench. Up front Shane Dempsey and TJ Cox were efficient on the scoreboard. The man of the match performance came from Sean Flanagan who controlled midfield and his relentless energy was highly influential in the outcome of the match. Lomans face Garrycastle next time out.

Clarkes Bar Junior Championship:
St Lomans Mullingar 4-25 Coralstown Kinnegad 0-07
St Lomans continued their 100 percent record in the Junior Championship with a comprehensive win over Kinnegad. In truth this game was quite one sided from the first whistle. Lomans raced into a nine-point lead by the first water break, largely due to excellent goals from Andrew Daly and a Conan O’Hara penalty. Coralstown steadied the ship slightly in the second quarter, leaving the score line at 2-07 to 0-5 at half time in favor of the Blues.
The second half continued in the same manner with the Blues dominating proceedings and punishing Kinnegad on the scoreboard largely due to goals from Conan O’Hara and Cian Cleary. An excellent performance for the Blues with every player putting in a performance. Conan O’Hara was the standout performer hitting a jaw dropping 2.11 on the day. Robbie Kenny’s men face the Downs next.

Under 17 Boys Championship Semi Final:
St Lomans Mullingar 3-10 Tubberclair 1-07
St Lomans booked their place in this year’s final after a fantastic win over Tubberclair last Monday evening in Lakepoint Park. Both sides initially traded scores with Ciaran Egerton and Thomas Meehan on target for the hosts. The Blues then hit four unanswered points before the break to take control of the match with Ross Clinton and Nedas Bielicas pointing either side of a Seanie Bracken double. The Blues went into the break four points to the good.
The Saints were excellent in the second half, Bracken added another score to increase the lead before two devastating quick-fire goals from Thomas Meehan and Mark Tunney well and truly put the Blues in charge. Ross Clinton added an excellent third goal, following a tubberclair point to leave the result beyond doubt. Tubberclair added a late goal and three points, but they were a mere consolation as Lomans secured their place in the under 17 final. The Blues will face Moate in the final with date and time to be confirmed. Well done to the lads and their mentors.

Absolutely massive congratulations to Westmeath Ladies on winning the intermediate all Ireland Championship!
St Lomans were well represented with Lucy McCartan and Leona Archibold both netting brilliant goals. Ciara Blundell was also excellent and got on the scoreboard with a point of her own. Finally Vicky Carr was superb and worked tirelessly in the middle of the park!
Well done to all our girls and to our club chairman Pat McCartan in the backroom team who have done their county proud.

Under 15 Girls:
Well done to our under 15 girls who won the Westmeath Feile after a hard fought match with St Josephs. Congratulations to all our players and their mentors!
Under 14 Girls:
Our U14 Girls overcame a very competitive Kinnegad side in a cracking game of football in Kinnegad to record their second win in the Championship. St Lomans had the better of the exchanges in the first half, but had to withstand a very strong fightback by the home side in the second half, before eventually coming away with a 7-10 to 6-07 win.
