St Lomans GAA Club Notes 23/08/2021:

Shay Murtagh Senior Championship:

St Lomans Mullingar 1-07 Coralstown Kinnegad 0-12

Hard luck to our seniors who suffered a disappointing defeat to Coralstown Kinnegad last Sunday evening in the Downs. Kinnegad dominated the opening stages and outscored Lomans by five points to two in the first quarter. Darren Giles was prominent for Kinnegad, the Blues two points came via Sam McCartan and Ronan O’Toole. Both sides then traded three scores each with O’Toole on target either side of a Kevin Regan point for the Saints. Kinnegad netted just before the break after following up on a rebound from an excellent Jason Daly save. Darren Giles and TJ Cox both pointed for their respective sides before the interval leaving six between the sides and the Mullingar men faced an uphill task heading into the second period.

The second half was an extremely disappointing one for Declan Kelly’s team who failed to register a score until the twenty ninth minute of the second half. Scores were limited in the second period of play but a quickfire 1-03 for Coralstown ended any hopes of a Blues comeback. Paul Whelehan hit an excellent point in the 59th minute of play which was a mere consolation for the defending Champions. In injury time Ronan O’Toole pounced on a defensive error and netted an excellent goal to add gloss to the scoreboard. In truth Coralstown Kinnegad dominated the Blues and were full value for their victory. The Saints now face an uphill task to reach the knockout stage and will have to regroup for their next match against Tyrrellspass in two weeks’ time.

Clarkes Bar Junior Championship:

St Lomans Mullingar 0-19 Garrycastle 2-07

Our junior side travelled to Ballymore last Sunday morning, looking to make it two wins from two against Garrycastle. The Blues started well scoring the first five points of the match. Jack Geoghegan started the scoring with an excellent point with the outside of his right boot. Andrew Daly and Adam Lynch pointed either side of a Conan O’Hara free. Conradh Reilly added to the scoring leaving the Saints up by five at the first water-break. Both sides traded four points each after the water-break, with Tristan Graham, Conradh Reilly, Adam Lynch and Cian Daly on target for the Mullingar men. Hugh Mulhern got the final score of the half to leave Lomans six up at the interval.

Garrycastle got the first score of the Second Half through Ger Heneghan, Lomans then kicked three consecutive scores through Adam Lynch, Cian Daly and Conan O’Hara. Mickey Greene and Ger Heneghan responded for the Castle to reduce the Blues lead to seven points. In the final quarter the Saints found an extra gear and kicked on with four points on the bounce, a superb treble from Conan O’Hara and a Cian Daly point. Garycastle netted twice late on to add some gloss to the scoreboard. Andrew Daly pointed late on before Jack Geoghegan rounded off the scoring with a top class placed ball from the 45.

Robbie Kenny’s charges were excellent on the day and worthy winners. Gerry Grehan was top class as usual. Eoghan O’Keefe the captain led the team superbly from centre-half back. Adam Lynch ended the day with an impressive tally of three points which capped an excellent individual performance. Cian Daly and Conan O’Hara were constant threats up top and this showed on the scoreboard. However, in midfield Lomans really displayed their dominance. Jack Geoghegan was excellent in midfield. Arguably though his partner Andrew Daly was the best player on the pitch. Daly dominated midfield and gave an exhibition in fielding and athleticism.

Team; Stephen Gallagher, Ethan Brown, Gerry Grehan, Senan Russell, Eoghan Hogan, Eoghan O’Keefe, Seanie Dinnegan, Jack Geoghegan (0.02), Andrew Daly (0.02), Adam Lynch (0.03), Conradh Reilly (0.02), Darren Kavanagh, Tristan Graham (0.01), Conan O'Hara(0.05,0.2f), Cian Daly (0.03). Subs used; Hugh Mulhern (0.01), Nigel Graham, Garett Hickey
